Job Title: Safety Business Partner

Salary Grade: LL1

Department: Health and Safety

Location: Field Based with Travel Across All Sites

Reports To: Group Safety Manager

Date: 27 January 2023

Job Purpose Statement

• Reporting to the Group Safety Manager, the Safety Business Partner is responsible for the overall safety
of colleagues and reputation integrity of the SN business through HSE-MS systems, company health and
safety policies, training, and audit regimes, always ensuring that suitable and sufficient arrangements
are in place and managed accordingly.
• The role is the initial point of contact for safety advice and support within an operational capacity,
covering warehousing, distribution, transport operations etc.. in the business owned by the Smiths News
Group.
• The role will support the business forward in terms of safety and compliance by ensuring that the sites
the role is responsible for are safe, legal, and compliant by partnering with the functional teams
• The role will support the safety strategy for the business, working alongside key operational
stakeholders, ensuring that the business achieves all plans and stages laid down in the strategy.
• Leading by example, the role will support the operation in developing and improving the safety culture
of Smiths News, implementing positive safety behaviours and a just culture to the business and include
training to colleagues and teams within the remit of the role
• The role will deputise for the Group Safety Manager as required

Key Results Area

• All aspects of safe and legal compliance with regards to Smith News and other Group Subsidiaries are
met
• Effectively managing incident and injury rates, with any associated absence periods, and personal injury
compensation costs.
• Compliance audit results from both BSI audit and internal Smiths News audits
• Ensure standard approach on safety both from process and behaviour point of view across all sites
• Formal action by enforcement authorities.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities


• Work alongside operational management teams to help them manage operational safety and risk
within their respective areas, helping to embed the ownership of safety within the operations.
• Ensure that the implementation of Smiths News policies, risk assessments, safe systems are
completed in a timely fashion and to the standard expected of Smiths News
• Ensure that all incident and accident reporting is done within time-scales as laid down by the
company, and that all incident and injury monitoring and reporting on compliance is line with
Smiths News policy and legal requirements.
• To liaise and engage with any external stakeholders who have reason to visit Smiths News sites,
such as HSE Inspectors, Environmental Health, Emergency Services etc..
• Providing immediate support to any serious or major incident occurred by the company, providing
independent and specialised investigation techniques, reporting information to the company as
and when required with management of any corrective actions
• Ensuring that all sites under their jurisdiction have the required number of trained and competent
colleagues to operate machinery (such as FLT’s) or provide additional support (such as Fire
Marshall or First Aid etc.)
• Provide monthly safety statistics on incidents, accidents and the appropriate Key Performance
Measures as set by the company.
• Work alongside key internal stakeholders such as people teams to assist in the promotion of
Health and Well Being alongside Safety.
• Always lead by example demonstrating positive safety behaviours and actions in line with
developing the company’s ‘just’ safety culture

Skills and Competencies

• Previous Safety experience gained from within a transport/logistics environment is preferred.


• Ability to conduct Accident Investigations thoroughly and in a timely fashion
• Effective communication skills both orally and written, with ability to negotiate and influence at various
levels
• Ability to chair safety teams calls, or participate on group discussions where safety is concerned
• Able to make quick but balanced decisions according to the needs of the business at the time, escalating
as and where necessary.
• Self-starter, but team player also, well organised with ability to manage own workload, working under
pressure and to be able to deliver against tight deadlines.
Environment
• Flexibility is key as this role is covering the network from the south up to and including Birmingham hub,
with expected travel, nights away and start and finish times as dictated by the needs of the business.
