The key takeaways are that there are 6 steps to the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, reviewing/revising, and rewriting. A paragraph contains a topic sentence and supporting sentences to develop one topic. An introduction should catch the reader's attention, state the topic and thesis, and provide context.

The 6 steps of the writing process are: choose a topic, gather ideas, organize, write a first draft, review structure and content, and revise. Pre-writing involves choosing a topic and gathering ideas, while drafting is writing the first version.

The main parts of a paragraph are the topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence. The topic sentence states the main idea. Supporting sentences provide details and reasons to develop the topic. The concluding sentence summarizes or restates the main point.

THE SIX STEPS OF THE WRITING PROCESS When we write we do more than just put words together to make

sentences. Good writers go through several steps to produce a good piece of writing. PRE WRITING STEP ONE: Choose a topic. Your teacher may give you a topic or ideas to write about. If not, choose your topic yourself. STEP TWO: Gather ideas. When you have selected your topic, think about what you will write about that topic. STEP THREE : Organize. Decide which of the ideas you want to use and where you want to use them. Choose which idea to talk about first, which to talk about next, and which to talk about last. Make an outline. DRAFTING STEP FOUR : Write. Write your paragraph or essay from start to finish. Use your outline. REVIEWING AND REVISING STEP FIVE: Review structure and content. Check what you have written. Read your writing silently to yourself or aloud. Look for places where you can add more information, and check to see if you have unnecessary information. REWRITING STEP SIX: Revise your writing. Proofread to check spelling , grammar and punctuation. Make final corrections. STEPS FIVE AND SIX MAY BE REPEATED SEVERAL TIMES. THE PARAGRAPH A paragraph is a series of sentences developing one topic. The topic of a paragraph is stated in one sentence. This sentence is called the topic sentence . The topic sentence states the general idea of a

paragraph, but other sentences are needed to develop and support the topic sentence. These are called supporting sentences. Every sentence in a paragraph should support the main idea stated in the topic sentence. The paragraph can be developed in different ways: a. by giving details b. by telling an incident c. by giving reasons d. by explaining There are a number of ways of arranging the ideas in a paragraph. The three most important are as follows: chronological order spatial order order of importance Well-planned sentences follow one another naturally in a paragraph. In order to achieve this, it is important to use transitional expressions, which will show the relation between one sentence and another. Transitional expressions can be classified according to the kind of relationship they show. CHRONOLOGICAL first then meanwhile later soon now formerly after finally SPATIAL inside outside beyond near behind ahead above to the right to the left etc. BETWEEN IDEAS furthermore moreover similarly in addition in fact in conclusion therefore however consequently as a result

The final sentence in a paragraph is called the concluding sentence. It sums up the main points or restates the main idea in a different way. A sentence that sums up the paragraph reminds the reader of what the writers main idea and supporting points were. A

sentence that restates the main idea should give the same information in a slightly different way, perhaps by using different words or by using different word order. A concluding sentence should not introduce a new point. HOW TO WRITE AN OUTLINE After you have gathered ideas and decided on a topic, writing an outline is of vital importance as it helps you organize your ideas in a structured way. To show how ideas work together, number them. To avoid confusion, use several different types of numbers and letters to show the organization of ideas. Use Roman numerals (I , II , III , IV ,V ) for your introduction and thesis statement, your body paragraphs and your conclusion I. II. III. IV. V. Introduction First main idea Second main idea Third main idea Conclusion

Next fill in more information for your body paragraphs by using capital Roman letters. ( A , B , C , D ) etc. Use one letter for each supporting idea in your body paragraph Complete this information for each body paragraph before going into more detail. I. Introduction II. First main idea A. First supporting idea B. Second supporting idea, and so on. Finally use Arabic numerals (1,2,3, etc. ) to give details for your supporting points. Not every supporting point will have details, and some points will have several. It is not important to have the same number of details for every supporting point. I. Introduction II. First main idea

A. First supporting point 1. First detail 2. Second detail B. Second supporting detail 1. First detail 2. Second detail, etc THE INTRODUCTION The first paragraph of an essay is called introduction. The introduction : is usually five to ten sentences. catches the readers attention gives the general topic of the essay gives the background information about the topic. states the main point ( thesis statement ) of the essay.

The paragraph is often organized by giving the most general ideas and then leading to the most specific idea, which is the thesis statement. The thesis statement gives the authors opinions or states an important idea about the topic. It should give an idea that can be discussed and explained with supporting ideas. A strong thesis statement should not be a sentence that only gives facts about a topic or states two sides of an argument. Ex : When studying a second language, there are several ways to improve your use of the language. (strong thesis statement. ) There are advantages and disadvantages to using nuclear power. ( weak thesis statement.) In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer months are warmer than the winter months ( weak thesis statement. ) One good way to develop a good thesis statement is to write an opinion you have about a topic.
