ME111 Orientation to Mechanical Engineering

Engr. Ronnel Lucero

Instructor
Mechanical engineering is the
study of motion, energy and force.
The mechanical engineer seeks to
control these elements by using a
combination of material, human
a n d e c o n o m i c re s o u rc e s to
develop mechanical solutions
that help satisfy the needs and
wants of society.
COMMON JOB FUNCTIONS

Designing products ranging from biomedical devices to

internal combustion engines to fuel-efficient motor vehicles,
motors and appliances.
COMMON JOB FUNCTIONS
Some of the most common job functions of a mechanical engineer are:

Researching new ideas and solutions that satisfy society’s demands or

improving or expanding older ideas and solutions.

The Mars Exploration Rover is a

mobile geology laboratory used to
study the history of water on Mars
COMMON JOB FUNCTIONS

Designing and building the machines that mass produce consumer products. Of
prime importance is designing and building machines that improve operating
efficiency.
COMMON JOB FUNCTIONS

Planning how energy is created, stored and moved in industries that produce and
deliver electrical power, such as natural gas, oil and alternative energy.
COMMON JOB FUNCTIONS

Managing the operations of a large system, such as a manufacturing facility or

a power plant.
ENERGY ENGINEERING
• is a broad field of engineering dealing with
energy efficiency, energy services, facility
management, plant engineering, environmental
compliance, sustainable energy and renewable
energy technologies.
• Energy engineering is one of the more recent
engineering disciplines to emerge.
• Energy engineering combines knowledge from
the fields of physics, math, and chemistry with
economic and environmental engineering
practices. Energy engineers apply their skills to
increase efficiency and further develop
renewable sources of energy.
POWER PLANT ENGINEERING
• is a division of power engineering,
and is defined as "the engineering
and technology required for the
production of central station electric
power."
• The field is focused on the generation
of power for industries and
communities, not for household
power production. The field is an
interdisciplinary field, using the
theoretical base of both mechanical
and electrical engineering.
POWER PLANT ENGINEERING
• A power plant or a power generating
station, is basically an industrial location
that is utilized for the generation and
distribution of electric power in mass scale,
usually in the order of several 1000 Watts.
• These are generally located at the sub-
urban regions or several kilometers away
from the cities or the load centers,
because of its requisites like huge land and
wa te r d e m a n d , a l o n g w i t h s e v e ra l
operating constraints like the waste
disposal etc.
SOURCES OF ENERGY
• NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY - The non-
renewable energy sources most
commonly used in our world today are
fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are the non-
renewable sources, oil, coal and natural
gas. (e.g Petrol, Diesel and Coal, Natural
gas, Nuclear Fuel)
• RENEWABLE ENERGY - is energy that is
collected from renewable resources,
which are naturally replenished on a
human timescale, such as sunlight, wind,
rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.
