EXAMPLE 2
GENERALIZATIONS
Find the x-intercept/s or zero/s of .
An intercept of a rational function is a point where the graph of the
rational function intersects the x- or y-axis.
SOLUTION:
x-intercept
–the value of x which make the function equal to zero a. Equate the numerator to zero.
– also referred to as the zeroes of the function b. Solve for the value of x.
y-intercept
– the value of the function f(x) when x is equal to zero

Thus, the x-intercepts of f(x) as well as the zeros are 3 and 2.

.
Note: Not all rational functions have both an x or y intercept. If you
cannot find a real solution, then it does not have that intercept.

EXERCISE 1

process on your answer sheet.

1. 3. 5.

Rational functions have properties which include the following: 2. 4.

 To find the x-intercept or zero of the function, find the values of x
where the numerator will be zero. Finding the y-intercept/s of Rational Functions
 To find the y-intercept, evaluate the function at x=0. EXAMPLE 1

Finding the x-intercept/s or Zero/s of Rational Functions Find the y-intercept of .

EXAMPLE 1 SOLUTION:

Find the x-intercept or zero/s of . a. Substitute zero to the variable x.

SOLUTION:

a. Equate the numerator to zero. b. Simplify.

b. Solve for the value of x.
Thus, the y-intercept
Thus, the x-intercept of f(x) as well as the zero of the function is 4. is –1.
