Dear:
INDUSTRIAS PROTON LTDA

Subject: 30392943 Oily Water Decanter | Industrias Proton Slop Oil CF5000 x 2
As per your request by email on Feb 17th, here the answer to your questions:
1. Please indicate the reasons why the power of the main motor was increase from 45kW to
55KW and the back drive motor from 11W to 15kW
During the design phase of this specific decanter type for your application our engineer calculated a
mechanical shaft power demand of 48.1 KW for the main motor. This means we have to choose the
next larger motor size which is 55 KW @ VFD
2. Why is the reason GEA will use a VDF of 75kW if the needed power is 55kW
Due to the long distance between VFD and motor (500m motor cable) because of voltage drop it is
recommended by ABB to use the VFD one size bigger.
3. On GEA expertise, please indicate in which applications you implement inert gas systems
Nitrogen purging system must be implemented in case of treatment of flammable products, with flash
points < 200°C, additionally the flashpoint is such low, that the value is lower than the actual separation
temperature+15K.
Consequences: -- > potentially dangerous / explosive gases can escape / evaporate during operation,
which mixing with an Oxygen can create a potentially hazardous mixture within the centrifuge. Pls. refer
to the definition of the ATEX definition, which may help you to understand the differences, when N2
purging is required and when not by handling flammable products in the decanter centrifuge.
The quoted equipment is for an installation within an Ex-Zone 1/2 as defined in IEC 60079-10-1,
ATEX Category 2G/3G; Gas Group IIA/IIB, Temperature Class T3,
(ATEX II 2G/3G IIA/IIB T3) and for the treatment of flammable products with flash points always
as minimum 15 K above max Process- / Ambient-Temperature (but less than 200°C).

b. EEX Protection class of decanter (ATEX Zone 1 (Cat.2)) – Nitrogen purged System
Ex-Zone 1 / 2, flammable products, flash points < 200°C
The quoted equipment is for an installation within an Ex-Zone 1/2 as defined in IEC 60079-10-1,
ATEX Category 2G/3G; Gas Group IIA/IIB, Temperature Class T3,
(ATEX II 2G/3G IIA/IIB T3) and for the treatment of flammable products with
flash points < 200°C
Conclusion: Option “B” (Nitrogen Purging System) must be used if the product is flammable (flash point
is <200°C) and the flashpoint is or:
- Unknown
- Lower than the separation temperature+15K
4. Why is necessary to seal the solid phase outlet of the decanter GEA
A safe and reliable operation with flammable products – as described above point 3 section “B” is ensured
by a sealing of the complete housing of the decanter centrifuge. By maintaining a higher pressure then
the atmosphere is it ensured that no atmospheric gases (e.g.: air with Oxygen content, or other elements)
can enter into the process area and only Nitrogen remains present. Nitrogen mixed with a flammable
product gas will not create any risk of hazard or potentially explosive mixture.
Note: As per the above description in point 3, the mixture of a flammable product gases and Oxygen is a
direct potentially hazard (explosive mixture) to human and machinery.
To maintain a positive overpressure (80-100 mbarg) it is absolutely necessary to seal the whole decanter
housing and process couplings (like product feed, centrate liquid outlet and solid discharge).
In case one of the outlets is not sealed properly, the required overpressure in the decanter housing cannot
be created during start up or kept during operation. As a direct consequence a safe operational condition
also cannot be ensured.
As per machine directive an unsafe operation condition is not permitted and in case of low pressure the
System automatically will shut down.
Note: in case during start up flushing sequence the minimum overpressure cannot be reached, the
decanter centrifuge cannot be started at all. The ISU system will Interlock and avoid start up as per
Performance Level C.
Note: It is an Industry Standard and valid for all Decanter centrifuge manufacturers!
