D. Analysis Study the pictures of chromosomes below and
answer the questions that follow.

1.What are chromosomes? _________________

2. Where are the chromosomes located in the cell?
___________
3. The short arm of the chromosome is referred to as
_________.
4. The long arm of the chromosome is referred to as
_________.
5. The point of attachment of the two sister chromatids
is called ________________.
E. Abstraction THE CHROMOSOME
Chromosomes are threadlike structures made of
protein and a single molecule of DNA
(Deoxyribonucleic acid) that serve to carry the
genomic information from cell to cell. In plants and
animals (including humans), chromosomes reside in
the nucleus of cells. Humans have 22 pairs of
numbered chromosomes (autosomes) and one pair of
sex chromosomes (XX or XY), for a total of 46. Each
pair contains two chromosomes, one coming from each
parent, which means that children inherit half of their
chromosomes from their mother and half from their
father. Each chromosome has a constriction point
called the centromere which divides the chromosome
into two sections, or “arms”. The short arm of the
chromosome is labeled “p arm”. The long arm of the
chromosome is labeled the “q arm”. The location of the
centromere on each chromosome gives the
chromosome characteristics shape and can be used to
help described the location of specific genes.
F. Application Show a picture of a chromosome and let the student
and label each part. (see attachment)
G. Practical Applications of Cite some examples of chromosomal abnormality or
Concepts and Skills in disorder.
