Direction: Write T if the statement is true and F if it is false.

What’s New
What is It

Most probably, you have heard the term “research” during your junior
high school or from those who have taken the subject during their senior
high school. I am pretty sure that this term has petrified you, chilled you
out, and made you anxious for all of them who shared about their bad
experiences on this subject. Nonetheless, you cannot deny that somehow at
this moment you are afraid to take this. Anyway, those are just
misconception of research. However, we can say that part of their stories
were true and part of those were overreactions. Nevertheless, research is an
interesting process because here you are going to explore and to investigate
in order to understand culture, practices, and phenomenon establishing
new knowledge that are worthwhile to discover and share.
Research is not that hard. It is just requiring you to exert extra effort
in understanding the rudiments on how to write it done and to enhance
your skills that you acquired through the years in school. In fact, the
process itself is not new to you. Let me give you some instance that you
might have done “researching”. Can you still recall when your Math teacher
directed to solve a mathematical problem that you cannot understand.
Thus, no matter how you try you cannot find the right answer or concepts
behind it couldn’t sink to your mind? Most probably, you ask somebody to
help you out or you open your cellphone and search for video tutorial. Can
you still recall when you first played your favorite online game, and no
matter how you try, you still can’t defeat your opponent’s hero? Well, I think
what you’ve done is that you ask your friend or an expert to help you out or
you searched in the internet on the techniques of other online gamer on the
problem.
Congratulations! The process that you have done is research. You
have problem, you established your methods on how to solve your problem,
you conducted literature review or actual interview and survey, then you
come up with solutions. These are just simple tasks that required you to
search in order to overcome your problems. Research flows in the same
manner. Doing research not necessarily mean creating extraordinary things
like Mark Zuckerberg who developed Facebook or even Zhang Yiming who
created TikTok. At your stage as a novice researcher and a student, you are
only required to do research in an appreciative manner. Thus, this is the
very essence of research.
Etymologically, research came from “re” and “search”. Re is a prefix
that means again and search is a word which means to look for. Therefore,
research is to look for what is. There are two (2) things that we need to
take note in this definition. First, research is not only about discovery of
something that is unknown. It is actually coming up with new explanation of
something that is known. Second, research is a process. It is a process of
searching about something in order solve an existing problem or difficulty. It
can be directed through interview, survey, field study, expert consultation,
and literature review.
Research is also understood as systematic investigation or inquiry
entailing collection of data, documentation of critical information,
analysis, interpretation of information. From the given definition, this
highlights the manner how research is conducted. Thus, it is systematic.
The question is how it becomes systematic and what makes it systematic.
The term systematic entails system. To understand clearly system, just
imagine your body. Are your hands located in your ears? Or is your nose
located at your chin? Of course you reason out that your hands are located
to where it should be. And your nose is located in the middle of your face.
The manner how your body parts are structured and organized implies
system. Research as systematic, means it follows system. Therefore,
whenever collecting data, documenting information, analyzing and
interpreting information are conducted, a particular method is used.
Research can be also viewed as creation of new knowledge and use
of existing knowledge in a new and creative way. Imagine these two (2)
scenarios: mother giving birth to a baby and a potter molding a pot.
Creation of new knowledge can be compared to a mother giving birth. The
mother stands for the research itself and the baby is the new knowledge.
Thus, through research, a new knowledge is born. On the other hand, a
potter molding a pot can be paralleled to the use of existing knowledge in a
new a creative way. Here, the potter stands for the researcher, the clay as
the existing knowledge, and the pot itself is the new knowledge made in a
creative way.
Now, do not be afraid to carry out research. It is because you can
make a research. Why? First it is not new to you. You are not just fully
aware that what you were doing is actually research and you have being
doing for many times. Second, research is not a demanding activity that
would exhaust your strength. However, there are particular techniques and
processes that are involved and needed to be carried out in conducting this
activity. What you have heard from others are piece of hoax and challenges.
It is a hoax for research is not after all hard. It is a challenge for you need
your dedication and commitment in conducting this exciting activity.

What’s More

What I Have Learned

In this lesson, you have learned that research is not actually new to
you. You have plenty of experience of carrying out this process. Your petty
experiences on how you solve simple problems and difficulties are actually
expressions of research. Therefore, there is no point of becoming afraid,
chilled out, or even anxious about conducting research. Furthermore, you
have learned here that research can be viewed in various ways. First it is
process of searching or looking for something. Second, it follows system or
structure in gathering information. Lastly, it is creation of new knowledge
based from previous knowledge in new and creative way.

2 Importance of Research

What I Need to Know

What I Know

What’s New

What is It

Do you feel annoyed if there is a power interruption? Can you imagine

a world without electricity? Do you feel mad if internet connection is stable?
Can you imagine if internet is not invented of if cellphone is not develop? Are
you worried if until now there is no cure for COVID-19? What if nobody will
find vaccine or medicine? Well of course, you will be annoyed, mad, and
worried. Life will be difficult if there is no electricity. Life will be boring if
there is no cellphone or even internet. Life is threatened if there will be no
cure for COVID-19. But thanks to research, all of our worries are just
temporary. Why? It is because of all these are brought to us by research.
Research made our lives comfortable, easy and secured. Various researches
has changed our lives.
Here are the some leading outputs of the researches that really
changed the world and our perspectives in lives.
1. Electricity
2. Engines
3. Telephone
4. Rubber
5. Modern Education
6. Computer
7. Internet
8. Vaccines for Viruses
9. Antibiotics
10. Modern Medicine
Can you imagine if no one has dared to conduct research on these
things? For sure life will be miserable. Thus, research is indeed important to
us. However, let me cite five (5) importance of research to our daily lives.

1. Research exposes truth.

2. Research improves humanity’s standard of living.
3. Research provides safer life.
4. Through research, necessary information are gathered.
5. Research explores humanity.

We all crave for truth for no one has the desire to live in lies. Just imagine,
for many centuries people believe that the world is flat and it is over the giant
turtle. Beyond the horizon of the sea is an abyss. But here comes Ferdinand
Magellan who proved this otherwise. Thanks to their courage and researches, now
we are living in truth that the world is round. Furthermore, for many years we
believe that
