CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nowadays, many people are using social media. Social media are online

technology platforms that help to connect people together far and near. It is

used to build relationship among people. Some other people are getting

addicted when using it while the other people is uncared for their health. Social

media has a great impact on people ‘s daily life. At this point, the social media

is enables people to ensure a practical communication with other people all over

the world and perform many other information related activities like reaching to

the desired information and sharing. Sometimes social media used in negatively

such as cyber bullying, stereotyping, pornography and even a go to place for

depressed people. Academic performance which is depicted by the grades of

students is a great concern student that spends excessive time on social

networks become dependent on it and it is believed that their academic

performance diminishes proportionately.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to investigate the Impact of Using Social Media on Academic

Performance of Grade 12 GAS students in Mulanay Instiitute.

Specially this research seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the impact of social media in academic performance of grade

12 GAS students?

2. Why students use social media?

3. How can avoid addiction on using social media?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of this study is to examine the question of what the impact

of using social media have on their users, in particular, how the use of social

media affects on the academic performance of g-12 GAS students in Mulanay

Institute.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This research focus on the impact of using social media on academic

performance of Grade 12 GAS students in Mulanay Institute. The participants of

this study is limited only the Grade 12 GAS students in Mulanay Institute.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITE RATURE

The internet is an interconnected computer networks that use the standard

internet protocol suite to serve billions of users worldwide. The advancement of

media technology has had a great influence on the way people now

communicate on a daily basis. The use of the social media among the youth of

today is growing by the day and gaining more and more popularity among

students. It is a way to make connections, not only on campus but with friends

outside of school. Its increased popularity has raised concern over how the time

spent and student activities on these sites could impact their performance in

school. Several studies have been carried out by different researchers to assess

how the use of social media impact student academic performance. Social Media

is that it is a ‘’communication channel which is very popular, extremely fast and

broad, has proven to be highly effective, as well as trusted by billions of

people, to share and discover content concerning individuals, brands, information,

entertainment and knowhow’’ (Dearborn, 2014). According to Landry (2014) social

media is a tool that could be used for good or bad, it all depends on the

person. Social media has its layers of good and bad. Yes, it is easier to

remember the bad rather than the good but, social media sites have

created opportunities for people all over the world. Statistics show that women

spend more time on social media than men, however women use social media

more effectively than men (Priestly, 2017). A study of Hitam and Idrus (2014)

revealed that women are more likely to engage in online communication to

maintain personal connections and for learning preferences, whereas men use

online communication for pursuing sexual interest and romance.

The diagram stated the cause and effect of using social media. The

Conceptual Framework shows that social media had a several cause like

Isolation, Poor self-steem and depression. And the effects of using it are Poor

sleep quality, Dissatisfaction with body image and Cyberbullying. The cause will

the independent variables and the effect will dependent variables.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher chosen research design is Descriptive design because the

researcher will observe the respondents on how to use or limit of social media.

This research design is focused on The Impact of Using Social Media on

Academic Performance of Grade 11 Humss A students at Mulanay, Institute.

THE SAMPLE

The target population of this study is from the Grade 12 HUMSS A students

in Mulanay Instiute. The researchers focused on the G-12 HUMSS A students

only, with population size of 34, the respondents will consider a sample of 10

respondents. Each individual is chosen randomly and entirely by chance, such

that each individual has the same probability of being chosen at any stage

during the sampling process Random sampling technique is used.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers used survey questionnaire that was composed of the

respondents profile and questions that related to the study. The survey

questionnaire that was used in this study was design to obtain information on

Impact of using Social Media on Academic Performance.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered from the respondents. Data are

presented in a form of table for easy analysis and interpretations.

Mulanay Institute there are six (6) students that said social media is can affect

their health while the four (4) students said that the social media is didn’t affect

their health.

Five (5) respondents are get a low grades when using social media

because the students is prioritize in using it than the studying and also five (5)

of respondents is not a drop or failing to down their grades.

80% of the respondents are actually used social media while studying

because some of the respondents are need to use Google and etc. for search

other details including their school works. And 20% of the respondents didn’t

use social media while studying.

Seven (7) respondents, out of ten (10) are addicted in using social media

because they spend a lot of time to use it and three (3) of the respondents is

not addicted in social media.

(3) of the students said that social media is not have a good impact in

academic performance.

90% of the respondents that said social media is help to improve their

understanding in academic performance and 10% of the respondents is disagree

that social media is can’t help to improve their understanding.

even the respondents is using social media they timely submit their assignment

on time. The two (2) respondents doesn’t submit their assignment on time

because of social media.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION

The study was conducted to examine about of social media and for using

of students. Social media is the collective of online communications channels

dedicated to community based input, interaction, content-sharing and

collaboration. The use of social media in education provides students with the

ability to get more useful information, to connect with learning groups and other

educational systems that make education convenient. In use of social media

should to know the limit of this, there’s a tendency to get addicted the user.

The impact to the academic performance is sometimes they don’t have time to

make assignment or study because they had long been on social media. And

also the students spend a lot of time while using social media or social

networking.

RECOMMENDATION

The researcher made some recommendations as follows;

1. Students with phones having internet facility should be encouraged to

either use it to supplement their academic work rather than the usual

chatting with friends all the time.

2. The students should create a balance between chit-chatting and academic

activities. More attention should be directed to academic activities.

3. There should be a decrease in the number of time spent by students

when surfing the net which will help them to focus on their study.

4. Should focus on making pleasant things useful promoting social networks

as a tool not only for communication and entertainment but also for

learning.
