Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Millions of individuals use social media routinely. The internet is more than just a

tool for information searching. Social media is a platform used to search through the

internet and it is a website and application that enables users to create and share content or
to participate in social networking. The study appear how it employ the Internet to connect

with others, whether for personal or professional reasons, establish new friends, reconnect

with old peers, and locate long-lost family members. As so many people utilize social

networking sites, this research have shown that social media became the number one

platform on the internet and because of that, many students have become addicted into

it specially millenials and senior high school students . Due to its potential influence on

academic achievement, social media is currently being studied by a large number of social

science academics, and a rising number of academic commentators are interested in

examining Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking platforms.

Students today who are addicted to social media due of being distracted to learn and their

ability to recall classroom information. If a student spends more time on social media than

examining the material they have learned in class, they may develop negative habits and receive

poor scores, which will make them feel unqualified to achieve their aspirations for a better career

in the future. As a result, students' aware, or social media usage without moderation can steer them

either toward positive experiences like enjoyment or bad ones like anxiety and depression. Also,

the results of numerous other relevant research on the psychological and emotional health of

general populations are consistent with this mixed good and negative impacts.

The researchers use a Qualitative research design that describes the current problem of the

ABM students in terms of the effects of social media on the academic performance of students.

This was done to have a better insight into the research as the target population was one of the
most avid users of these sites and could provide exceptional responses. Even the understanding of

the questionnaire was easy for them as they were familiar with the sites and are quite clear about

the reasons, they use it for and the various problems that they now face because of the effects of

using these social networking sites.

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH

The universal growth of social media usage among tertiary students has been linearly

The aim of this study was to investigate the social media addiction of senior high school

students in terms of some variables such as age, class, type of school, gender and daily average

internet usage period. Survey method was used in the study. (Afacan, 2019)

Impact of social media on students' academic performance

Social networking has become a common international trend which has spread its reach to

almost every corner of the world. The use of social media sites have exploded and evolved into an

online platform where people create content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious

rate. (Celestine, 2018)

Social Media are growing rapidly among the young generation of the world. School age

students widely engaged using Social Media So, they will affect the students personal and

academic live. (Sivakumar, 2020)

Social networking sites (SNSs) confer countless benefits to mankind through

increased communication and connection between and among millions of people on the

globe.

and communication options, and pressure to use them effectively and constantly.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The overall objective of this study is to determine the effects of social media overuse to the

academic performance of ABM students in Bulacan. At this stage in the research, Social media

overuse is defined as a factor that affects the Academic Performance of ABM students in Bulacan.

Specially, It seeks to answer the following questions;

1. What do you think is the most efficient way to avoid social media overuse/addiction?

2. Why do you think we need to use social media on a daily basis?

3. What do you think are the benefits that social media does to you so far?
4. What the reasons why social media has an effect on the academic performance among senior

high school students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study was significant to the following:

Senior high school ABM students – The study will enable the students of the senior

high level so that they will be aware that, apart from social benefits of this social networking

sites, using the sites more than necessary will possible dangers to their health.

Teachers – this study will help the teachers of the school to know the influence that

social media has on their students, so as to assist them to enlighten and create awareness to the

students on the possible influence it has on them. It will be relevant is assisting students in

understanding the diversity of social media.

Future researchers – The study will help researchers with more information on the

influences of social media student’s academic performance. It will provide relevance material for

students and other researchers undertaking similar research.


Result of this study will benefit the following:

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study will focus on the effects of overuse of social media to the academic performance

of Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students in Bulacan. The study will aim to

identify how the frequency and duration of social media usage affects the academic performance

of ABM students and how the use of social media impacts their study habits and productivity.

Delimitations:

1. The study will only focus on ABM students in Bulacan, Philippines. 2. The study will only

consider social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

3. The study will only analyze the effect of social media overuse on academic performance, and

will not cover other areas such as mental health or social relationships.

4. The data collection process will solely rely on surveys and interviews, and will not include any

experimental or intervention approaches.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE


This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the researchers

have perused to shed light on the topic under study.

social media had improved the communication between the Faculty member and students which

facilitate the communication of the correct information and Improve understanding and the

development of the ideas and the courses. Based on the Information collected, it is noticeable to

say that the use of the social media during the lecture Time is not recommended.

Social networks bring people together by removing territorial barrier sand by providing

knowledge from around the globe. An average person spends about three hours a day on social

networks (Hameed and Irfan, 2021;Celestine and Nonyelum, 2018).

The fast growth of social media networks into educational systems, as well as the provision

of educational services via these platforms, has pushed researchers and educators to investigate

how these technologies have changed the education system (Saini & Abraham, 2019).

By providing online lectures and allowing students to communicate with their lecturers and

classmates to gain and share information efficiently, social media has changed the educational

environment (Al-Qaysi et al.,2021).


HYPOTHESIS

Social media has a significant effect to ABM students’ unconciousness health and grades.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

This study was made by the means of Qualitative methods of researcher. The researcher

attempted to get the answers to the aforementioned problem and to justify and satisfy the objectives

of the study. Likewise, it also attempted to know the different impact to their lifestyle. According

to Sis International Research Qualitative research is generally more explorative, a type of research

that is dependent on the collection of verbals, behavioral or observational data that can be

interpreted in a subjective manner. An interview is a case study research method that we use relies

on asking questions to collect data. Interviews involve two or more people, one of whom is the

interviewer asking the questions. There are several types of interviews, often differentiated by their

level of structure.

3.2 DATA GATHERING

The researchers had allotted vigorous time, effort and cooperation in developing their

questionnaire to serve its intended respondents. The interview was created using suitable questions
modified from related research and individual questions formed by the researchers. The

researchers interviewed the target respondents and started collecting data. As far as data collection

tools were concerned, the conduction of the research involved the use of semi-structured

questionnaire, which was used as an interview guide for the researcher. Some certain questions

were prepared, so as for the researcher to guide the interview towards the satisfaction of research

objectives, but additional questions were encountered during the interviews.
