Some 1,300 bluegrass fans flocked to K.C. Campground in Milan last weekend for the 14th annual Milan Bluegrass Festival. The event was organized by Jim and Fay Wilder. Festival-goers were treated to three days of bluegrass from some of the top acts in the country. Stan Socha has been coming to the festival since its first year. It has been fabulous, he said. Jim Wilder does a fabulous job of picking out the talent. With the music industry struggling, bluegrass has been no exception to the rule, he said. But based on this weekend, there is still a dedicated fan base who loves the fast-paced finger-picking and vocal harmonies that make up bluegrass. Darren Beachley is the

guitarist and vocalist for the band HeartTown, which made its first appearance as a group at the festival this year. Youve got to love coming to Milan, he said. Its a great festival, and its one of the better attended festivals. Plus, theres no trouble. Mandolin player Tim Laughlin added, The crowd really loves the music, too. They really know their bluegrass, which is important, Beachley said. You cant come up here and kind of mess around; you kind of got to do your thing, and thats what its all about. Banjo player Shayne Bartley said he appreciates the crowds response. I dont think we do anything differently, she said, but you can tell by that crowds reaction how

Jenna Manor of Milan was crowned Monroe County 4-H Fair queen Aug. 4, selected from 36 4-H queens vying for the crown. Manor, 19, was crowned Horse and Pony Board queen in May following a test, interview, horse demonstration and horse skills competition. She then represented the horse board as queen in the Monroe County competition, where she was inter-

viewed by a three-panel judging team. The last time a representative of the horse board was selected as fair queen was in the 1970s. It was a huge dream, but I never thought it possible, Manor said. Im very honored for being chosen. I was in shock and, the next morning, I thought I was dreaming. It just hadnt sunk in. Manor, who enjoys the Monroe County 4-H Fair each year, will attend many 4-H functions, local community activities and public appearances as 4-H Fair queen. The responsibility, dedication and time spent caring for her horse and other animals have certainly paid off. A student
