LLO3 Explain the important features of emitter follower and also list its applications.
On topic 1
STEP 1: Draw the C.C. amplifier circuit for which analysis is to be carried out, as shown.
STEP 3: Replace the active device (i.e. BJT) by simplified hybrid model as shown:
a.c. equivalent circuit of Emitter Follower using generalized simplified hybrid model
The i/p impedance of CE amplifier acts as a load for source. As Zilow, more current is
drawn from source and hence more drops take place in Rs unnecessarily and little only
transferred to i/p of CE amplifier. Similarly, o/p section acts as a source (to the load R L)
and hence o/p impedance is acts as internal resistance. As Zo is high (i.e. internal
resistance of CE amplifier is high) w.r.t RL, only little voltage transferred to load.
This problem can be solved by using emitter follower as shown:
ii. Current gain is very high and voltage gain is nearly one. ( ), due to these
features it can be used as Buffer or driver amplifier.
Applications of CC amplifier:
o Impedance matching device
o Buffer amplifier
