Continuing from Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen’s ‫قواعد في اإلمالء‬


(Rules for Writing), we learn when to write the hamzah
(‫ )ء‬in its various forms.

The hamzah can occur in the:

1. beginning of a word
2. end of a word
3. middle of a word

When hamzah occurs at the


beginning of a word
In this case the hamzah is always written in the alif
form (‫ أ‬or ‫)إ‬. For example, in ‫( ُأْك ِر م َأُبْو َك إْك راًما‬your father
was honored an honoring), all three words have the
hamzah in the beginning.

When hamzah occurs at the


end of a word
At the end of the word, hamzah is:

1. sometimes written as itself (‫)ء‬:


1. If the letter before it has a waw with
dhammah and a shaddah ( ‫)ًّو‬. For example:
‫الَتَبُّوُء‬
2. If the letter before it has sukun on it. For
example: ‫( ِد ْف ء‬warmth), ‫( ُقُر ْو ء‬menstrual
cycles), ‫( ُد عاء‬invocation), and ‫( َمِلْي ء‬filled)
An exception would be if the hamzah is
nasb-ized with tanwin and it is possible
to connect it to the silent letter. It
would then be written over a ‫ي‬. For
example: ‫ ِخ ْط ًئا َك ِبيًر ا‬and ‫َش ْي ًئا َم ْذُك ْو ًر ا‬

2. sometimes written on a letter that resembles the


vowel on before it
1. Upon a waw (‫)و‬, as in ‫الَتواُط ُؤ‬
2. Upon an alif (‫)ا‬, as in ‫َقَر َأ‬
3. Upon a yaa (‫ )ي‬as in ‫ُقِر َئ‬

When hamzah is in the middle


of a word
In this case, it can be written:

1. On an alif (‫)أ‬
When it has sukun after a letter with fathah,
as in ‫َر ْأس‬

When it has a fathah, after a letter with either


fathah or a “sound” letter with sukun, as in
‫ َس َأَل‬and ‫َيْس َأُل‬
Note: a “sound” letter is a letter that is not
of the three “defective” letters (‫)ا – و – ي‬
The same rule is followed if the fath-ized
hamzah or the letter before it has a shaddah
on it, as in ‫ َتَذ َّأَب‬or ‫َتَبّواها‬

2. On a waw (‫)ؤ‬
When it has fathah or sukun after a letter
with dhammah, as in ‫ ُمَؤ ِّلف‬and ‫ُلُؤ ُلؤ‬
When it has dhammah after a letter that has
dhammah, fathah or sukun, as in ‫ُش ُؤ ْو ن‬
(affairs), ‫( َيُؤ ُّم‬he leads) or ‫( َمْر ُؤ وس‬some write it
as ‫)َمْر ُءْو س‬
When two ‫’و‬s follow each other there
are several approaches for writing it
(taking ‫ َمْر ُؤ وس‬as an example):
Writing ‫ ء‬on the line by itself, as in
‫( َمْر ُءْو س‬or as ‫ ئ‬if it can connect to
the letter before, as in ‫)ُش ُئون‬
Writing it on a ‫ و‬as in ‫َمْر ُؤ وس‬
Writing it on the second ‫ و‬and
dropping the first, as in ‫َمْر ؤس‬

3. On a yaa (‫)ئ‬
Whenever it has a kasrah, as in ‫َس ِئم‬, or ‫( ُس ِئَل‬he
was asked), ‫( أْس ِئَلة‬questions) and ‫َم ساِئل‬
(matters)
If it has fathah, dhammah or sukun after (a
letter with a kasrah or silent ‫)ي‬, as in ‫( ِم َئة‬a
hundred), ‫( ِفُئْو ن‬groups), ‫( ِبْئر‬well), ‫( ُمِس ْيئان‬two
who harm), ‫( ُمِس ْيُئْو ن‬ones who harm)

4.ِAs itself (‫)ء‬


When it has a fathah and is after an
elongated sound ( ‫ )َح رف َم ّد‬that is not a ‫( ي‬i.e.
a ‫ ا‬or ‫)و‬, as in ‫( َتساَء ل‬ask one’s self ), ‫ُمُر وَء ة‬
(chivalry), and ‫( َس َمْو َء ل‬name of a person)
Or the alif used for duals comes after it but
it’s not possible to connect the ‫ ء‬to what’s
before it, as in ‫( ُج ْز ءان‬two parts)
If it is possible to connect the ‫ ء‬to
what’s before it, then it’s written on a ‫ي‬,
as in ‫( َخ َط ئان‬two mistakes)
Note: Shaykh Uthaymeen ‫ رحمه اهلل‬did
not explicitly mention it, but the same
rule is applied if the alif of tanwin
follows as well, as in ‫( ِخ ْط ًئا‬can connect
the ‫ ء‬to what’s before it) and ‫ُج ْز ًء ا‬
(cannot connect it)
