Aim: To analyse the given salt for acid radicals and basic radicals

Physical Characteristics:
State: Solid Colour: White
Odour: No characteristic smell Solubility: Insoluble in water
Experiment Observation Inference

1. Dry test tube heating: Colour of the residue is yellow Zn2+ may be present
when hot and turns white when
A pinch of the sample is heated in
cold
a dry test tube

2. Flame Test:

Flame test is performed with No characteristic flame is Na+, K+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, Sr2+ may
conc. HCl observed be absent

3. Borax bead test: Cu2+, Ni2+ , Co2+ , Mn2+, Fe3+ may

be absent
This test is not performed
since the given salt is white
4. Dil. H2SO4 test: Colourless, odourless gas is CO32- may be present
evolved with brisk effervescence
A pinch of the sample is added to
which turns lime water milky.
dil. H2SO4 in a test tube and then
it is heated

5. Conc. H2SO4 test: Cl-, Br-, I-, NO3-, CH3COO-, C2O42- are
absent
This test is not performed
since the salt reacted with dil.
H2SO4

6. Confirmatory test for CO32-:

(i) A pinch of sample is shaken Salt is not dissolved Insoluble carbonate is indicated
with water

(ii) Dil. HCl is added to the salt

Colourless, odourless gas is Insoluble carbonate is confirmed
evolved with brisk effervescence
which turns lime water milky.

7. Test for NH4+: No ammonia gas is evolved NH4+ is absent

A pinch of the sample is heated

with conc. NaOH solution

8. Preparation of Original Clear solution is obtained It is labelled as Original Solution

Solution (O.S.): (O.S.)

A small portion of the sample is

dissolved in dil. HCl and the
following tests are carried out
with this solution

9. The O.S. is prepared in dil. HCl No ppt. is formed Group I is absent (Pb2+ is absent)

10. Through the above solution, No ppt. is formed Group II absent (Pb2+,Cu2+ absent)
H2S is passed

11. To the remaining solution, No ppt. is formed Group III absent (Fe3+, Al3+
Small amount of solid NH4Cl is
added, Solution is boiled, cooled absent)
and excess NH4OH is added

12. Through a part above White ppt. is formed Group IV present (Zn2+ present)
solution, H2S is passed

13. Confirmatory test for Zn2+:

The above white ppt. is dissolved

in dil. HCl and H2S is boiled off.
A white ppt. is formed Zn2+ is confirmed
(i) To a part of above solution
NaOH solution is added dropwise.

(ii) To another part, potassium

ferrocyanide solution is added. A white ppt. is formed Zn2+ is confirmed

Result: The given salt contains Zn2+ as basic radical and CO32- as acid radicals. Therefore, the given
salt is ZnCO3
