Crime prevention: individual and community safety rules

The modern world suffers from a wide variety of crimes, despite the fact that
laws and the police do everything to prevent them. Each country has its own crime
prevention department or organization, but this does not mean that the number of
crimes has decreased. Crime prevention means the prevention of criminal activity at
the initial stage, when the offender is only plotting, planning to commit a certain
crime. There are certain individual and public safety rules for crime prevention that it
is important for every member of society to know and follow.
As for community safety rules, it is important to take them at the level of the
neighboring community. Such measures concern the installation of lighting on the
street. You can talk to your neighborhood association about increased lighting on
your street. Burglars often case an entire street or neighborhood to determine if it’s a
good target, but often prefer to do so in the dark of night. A well-lit neighborhood
will likely deter him from your area, or at the very least make it very difficult for him
to slip away undetected. Installation of cameras is also an effective measure.
Cameras enable users to record footage so they can watch at a later time, help find
criminals, and receive justice from the law. Another important rule for crime
prevention is forming a neighborhood watch program. This can also give you the
opportunity to get to know your neighbors better. You can speak to your local police
department about giving your group an informal lecture that can provide insight into
identifying a suspicious person and how to recognize a burglary in progress and what
to do in an emergency.
With regard to individual safety rules, each person can carry protective
equipment, such as a spray or an electric shock weapon. It can also be a good idea to
take self-defense courses. Then you can fight back the attacker. However, the most
important rule of personal safety is of course to be watchful and always aware of
your surroundings.
Equally important are the rules for home safety. A great idea is to get to know
your neighbors. Crime tends to be lower in tight-knit communities because neighbors
are more likely to look out for each other and can easily spot a stranger. Your nosy
neighbors, whom you try to avoid, can be one of your best assets in home crime
prevention because they offer extra eyes and alert you to any suspicious activity that
may occur in your absence. However, if you have money you can buy yourself a
home security system. Once it’s installed, you should make it a regular habit to use it.
Though it may seem inconvenient to have to arm the system every time you leave
the house, many burglars are aware that the responsibility is often neglected and
may not be deterred by window stickers or yard signs warning of home protection.
Also, you can reinforce windows with metal bars. It may seem an extreme step, but
burglars will often break a window in order to gain entry. Make it impossible for
them to break through by hiring a window company to install safety glass or
impossible to squeeze through by installing metal bars.
All these rules are aimed at ensuring the safety of a person's life in society.
However, the most important rule of crime prevention is simply to be attentive to the
people around you. This can save not only your property or the property of your
neighbors, but also your life.
