Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able
to:
• demonstrate understanding of characteristic features
of classical period;
• describes musical elements of given classical periods
pieces;
• sing and perform themes of symphonies and other
instrumental forms; and
• reflect the importance of studying music during the
classical period
What is classical music?
• Term “classical” refers to the
period that took place from
1750 to 1820
• Classical music may be
described as having
contrasts in mood like a
sudden or gradual change
in expression from joy to
depression
What is classical music?
• Have rhythmic patterns of
sudden pauses, syncopations,
and frequent changes in the
duration of notes
• It may begin in homophonic in
texture with a simple melody,
which then changes to a more
complex polyphonic texture
• Commonly composed of two different phrases of the
same length, classical music is often balanced of two
different phrases of the same length
• The second phrase may be similar to the first but is
easy to sing and ends decisively
• Composers expressed different shades of emotion
presented through use of crescendo (a gradual
increase especially in the loudness of music.) and
diminuendos (a decrease in loudness.)
Classical Music Elements
• Having a homophonic texture and
harmony and contrasts in mood.
• Melodies are formal and simple.
• The dynamics were clearly expressed
through the wide use crescendo and
decrescendo.
• The rhythm was very defined and
regular
Major Composers
during Classical
Period
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
• Austrian composer
• Only eight when he was enlisted to
render song performances at St.
Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna
• Part of so-called “Viennese School”
• Important influence of Mozart and
Beethoven
• By 1780’s, his music was published all
over Europe and well regarded
worldwide He died at the age of 77 and remembered
as the first great symphonist and inventor of
string quartet

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• Performing in public at the age of six
and performed various places in Europe
• 1761, appeared as a keyboard
performer
• 1763, composed first opera “La Finta
Semplica”
• 1775, wrote his first Italian opera titled,
“La finta giardiniera”
• 1791, played his last piano concerto
• 1878, he arrived in Vienna to study with
Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• He was described as: a succesful
composer; a violinist; and an assistant
concert master
• The son of Leopold and Anna Maria
Pertl Mozart
• In 1762, his father took both Wolfgang
and his sister to the Prince-Elector
Maximilian Joseph III of Bavaria in
Munich
• He wrote two operas, Ascanio in Alba
1771 and Lucio Silla 1772

Ludwig van Beethoven
• Born in Germany in 1770
• Widened scope of the following
music forms; sonata, symphony,
concerto, and quartet
• At the age of 19, he was assigned
to compose a musical memorial
for the Holy Roman Emperor
Joseph II titled “Cantata on the
Death of Emperor Joseph II”
• He composed musical pieces that
earned him the reputation of being a
masterful composer
• Published his Six String Quartets in
1801
• Struggled to come to terms with a
shocking and terrible fact that he was
going to be deaf
• He was never got married but he was
desperately in love with Antonie
Brentano
• Beethoven became completely deaf in
1816 but never deter him from
composing great music
• His greatest late works include Missa
Solemnis. Another composition is titled
String Quarter No.14
• Beethoven’s last symphony was
completed in 1824
• He died in 1827

The Classical Music
Sonata
• Type of music composition played on instruments
that usually consist of two or four sections where
each is in a related key but with unique music
character
• It originally denoted as a musical piece played on
instruments
• Expressed using one or two instruments
• For larger instrumental group or a string quartet
Structure of a Sonata-Allegro Form
It has three parts: Exposition, Development, and Recapitulation
Exposition is like an introduction to an essay. It introduces the

main themes in a composition
Development is the second part, it expands on the themes
introduced in the exposition. It gives the composer an
opportunity to improvise or move to other key tonalities and
themes.
Recapitulation where the composer settles back to the home
key ad represents the original themes. It restates major ideas of a
musical work.

Symphony and Concerto
Difference between a Symphony and a Concerto
A Symphony is an extended composition usually
comprising of 4 movements or sections. The first and last
usually lively or fast; the second movement is usually
slow; and the third can be a number of different forms and
speed.
A concerto is usually in 3 movements – fast, slow,
fast and it features a solo instrument. In a concerto, once
can easily find a solo instrument being played and
accompanied by other significant instruments.
Contemporary Arts and Media
• Classical Music elements can
be found in modern music
• Some elements of the classical
music from previous century
are retained in 21st century
music
• This could be described as
post-modernist, polystylistic,
and eclectic.
• Contrasting themes and ideas,
which was practiced by
Beethoven was used by
Beatles in the song “When I am
Sixty-four”

Mercury Venus
Mercury is the closest planet Venus has a beautiful name
to the Sun and the smallest and is the second planet from
one in the Solar System the Sun. It’s terribly hot there
Classical music is found in cartoons like “Looney
Tunes”, “South Park”, “The Simpsons”, and “Charlie
Brown”.
