Classical Period
Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able
to:
• demonstrate understanding of characteristic features
of classical period;
• describes musical elements of given classical periods
pieces;
• sing and perform themes of symphonies and other
instrumental forms; and
• reflect the importance of studying music during the
classical period
What is classical music?
• Term “classical” refers to the
period that took place from
1750 to 1820
• Classical music may be
described as having
contrasts in mood like a
sudden or gradual change
in expression from joy to
depression
What is classical music?
• Have rhythmic patterns of
sudden pauses, syncopations,
and frequent changes in the
duration of notes
• It may begin in homophonic in
texture with a simple melody,
which then changes to a more
complex polyphonic texture
• Commonly composed of two different phrases of the
same length, classical music is often balanced of two
different phrases of the same length
• The second phrase may be similar to the first but is
easy to sing and ends decisively
• Composers expressed different shades of emotion
presented through use of crescendo (a gradual
increase especially in the loudness of music.) and
diminuendos (a decrease in loudness.)
Classical Music Elements
• Having a homophonic texture and
harmony and contrasts in mood.
• Melodies are formal and simple.
• The dynamics were clearly expressed
through the wide use crescendo and
decrescendo.
• The rhythm was very defined and
regular
Major Composers
during Classical
Period
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
• Austrian composer
• Only eight when he was enlisted to
render song performances at St.
Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna
• Part of so-called “Viennese School”
• Important influence of Mozart and
Beethoven
• By 1780’s, his music was published all
over Europe and well regarded
worldwide He died at the age of 77 and remembered
as the first great symphonist and inventor of
string quartet

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• Performing in public at the age of six
and performed various places in Europe
• 1761, appeared as a keyboard
performer
• 1763, composed first opera “La Finta
Semplica”
• 1775, wrote his first Italian opera titled,
“La finta giardiniera”
• 1791, played his last piano concerto
• 1878, he arrived in Vienna to study with
Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
• He was described as: a succesful
composer; a violinist; and an assistant
concert master
• The son of Leopold and Anna Maria
Pertl Mozart
• In 1762, his father took both Wolfgang
and his sister to the Prince-Elector
Maximilian Joseph III of Bavaria in
Munich
• He wrote two operas, Ascanio in Alba
1771 and Lucio Silla 1772
