Read this passage about fish farming. Then answer the questions.

A New Crop for Farmers

1 Long ago, people counted on hunting for food. Later, people settled in
certain places and began farming. Farming was more predictable (able to know
what will probably happen before it happens) than hunting. It was also more
reliable (able to be trusted). Hunters didn’t always come home with as much
food as people needed.

2 Today, the world has begun to follow the same pattern in fishing. For
hundreds of years, people caught fish for food and other uses. But now, the
fishing industry can’t meet the growing demand for fish. For this reason, one of
the fastest-growing industries (businesses) in the world is fish farming, or
“aquaculture.” Since 1950, fish farming has grown fast. Today, it provides more
than 40 percent of all fish production (fish for people) in the world. Growth in
the last 25 years has been huge.

3 Fish farmers use a number of ways

to grow fish. Some use large indoor
tanks. These tanks allow them to control
all the factors (parts) in the process.
They can provide an exact amount of
feed. Any wasted food and fish waste can
be collected and reused. The tanks can
be cleaned after each use. There is also
no danger of fish escaping into wild
waters. So they will not spread diseases
to wild fish or take over their habitats. Indoor fish tanks

4 But these types of fish farms make up a small portion (part) of the total.
Around the world, especially in Asia, most fish farming occurs in lakes and ponds
or the ocean. Giant nets hold
thousands of fish at a time. The
caged fish are fed food made from
smaller fish and fish oil. These are the
sources of their food in a natural
setting. Some farms are
experimenting with fish food made
from soybeans, although fish do not
ocean fish eat soybeans in the wild. Any wasted
farm in Asia food and fish waste fall to the lake or
ocean floor.

5 Growing fish in fish farms has caused some problems. In a few cases, fish
that are not native (born there) to an area have escaped and crowded out the
natural fish. But with a worldwide food shortage and a growing demand for fish
and other food, we will surely see more fish farms in the future.
