Can you identify the electrons, nucleus and energy level of the atom in the picture?
What can you say about the location of nucleus , electron and energy level?
Consider a honey bee collecting nectar from flowers. A bee must make trips to and
from the hive. Suppose a camera is mounted above the hive. It is set to take one
picture every minute over a five – hour period. The dots in the figure show the
position of the bee in each picture taken. The bee is most likely to be found near the
1.ENGAGE hive. The probability of finding the bee within the dashed line is 90%. Why is it
more likely to find a bee near its hive .
It does not tell exactly where the bee can found at any instant. This region in space
may be compared to an electron orbital. The higher the electron density, the higher
the probability that an electron may be found in that region.

Student’s Task:
Complete the paragraph below. Refer to table 1 for your answer.
Energy levels contain different numbers of __________. Different _________ are
used to represent each kind of orbital. The number of p orbitals is ________. There
are four orbitals in_______ energy level. The maximum number of electrons in an s
orbital is ____. A maximum of 10 electrons is present in the _____ orbitals. The F
orbitals can hold _______electrons. In an energy level with 9 orbitals, the orbitals
are lettered ___________.

The illustrations above show the shape of electron cloud (in different
axis) or the electron orbital .An electron orbital describes a region in
space where electron is most likely to be found. There are four kinds of
orbitals. Each kind has different letter. The letters are s,p,d,f. An orbital
can hold no more than 2 electrons. Thus, it can be empty, have 1, or
have 2 electrons.
An electron is usually found at the lowest energy level. If the electron
jumps from a lower to a higher energy level, the atom is in an excited
state. However, the electron of an excited atom quickly returns to the
lower energy level, returning to its ground state.
Valuing:
What do the lines in a line spectrum tell about what is happening in an atom?
5.EVALUATE Make a song or poem about energy level and orbital of an atom. Use the rubrics
below to rate students work.
