How to sound smart in your TEDx Talk | Will Stephen | TEDxNewYork
After watching the video, answer the following questions:
1. What communication strategies were used by the speaker? 2. How would you classify this speech according to what you have learned regarding speech styles and types of speech according to delivery and purpose earlier in the term? Justify your answer. REFLECTIVE ESSAY The video I watched was definitely nothing. At first, I thought Will was building an introduction until he could say his main points were — a meaningful argument I was anticipating; this was until I realized that his talk is about how to sound smart even though you're talking meaningless. The strategies I observed in his way of communicating to sound intellectual: 1. As the talk starts, he speaks about his topic and maximizes the use of hand gestures and body movements. 2. I noticed the technique of sustaining interaction by repetition, where Will talked about his use of hand gestures. In this portion, "I'm going to make a lot of hand gestures. I'm going to do this with my right hand, I'm going to do this with my left. I'm going to adjust my glasses." As you can read, he gave ideas that still have the same meaning and expanded them to provide examples. 3. He utilizes the strategy of topic control, where he focuses on relevant points and expounds furthermore. 4. I can also hear some pauses he used to emphasize some things. In here, "this is just me… buying… time… " I can say in that part where he added pauses to highlight that info. 5. Lastly, fillers, a lot of fillers, actually. When he provides those numbers, graphs, and words that are completely gibberish and irrelevant just to give examples, he makes it sound so informative and full of lessons even though it was nothing.
As for the speech style, I conclude that it is interactive, memorable, and
entertaining; thus, it is on Casual style. It is flexible, has informal slang words, and speaks in a comfortable manner. Now for the types of speech according to purpose, it is obviously Informative. Will Stephen exhibits the strategies he describes to the audience rather than merely telling them what they are. By limiting the content to "absolutely nothing," he highlights his abilities, such as adjusting his glasses or how he "builds to a moment" at the end. As for the type of speech according to delivery, it is Extemporaneous. The delivery is adequately planned and rehearsed in a conversational tone utilizing brief notes. Will hilariously delivers the speech, making it unforgettable. Because he conveys and organizes the topic differently, instead of having it as a presentation, Will Stephen delivers it as a speech, incorporating seemingly pointless content into his purpose.
