HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester | Architecture

The HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester should be placed on
a stable and flat surface. The unit should not be
placed directly beside inlets/outlets for heating or
air conditioning.

The protective earth cable should be connected

from the HVPD Kronos ® Spot Tester to the
substation earth/ground before attachment of the
other cables. Use the provided green/yellow cable
and ensure earth connection is secure.

All BNC signal cables, power cable and protective

earth cable should be securely tidied as so they do
not pose a trip hazard.

HVPD Ltd. | Placement in Substation and Earth Connection

The HVPD Kronos ® Spot Tester unit can be powered from the
AC mains: 90 – 260 V AC 50/60 Hz and has an in-built battery.
The unit will wake automatically over USB. The power switch
should be pressed only when using AC mains.

The unit will charge whenever there is AC power to the unit and
the power switch is switched on. The battery status, for example
battery charge, can be viewed through the KST control
software, see Section Battery Status.

The vents on the HVPD Kronos ® Spot Tester should not be

covered during operation.

The unit has in-built fans to regulate the internal temperature

and will turn on and off automatically. The fans will come on
immediately after power is switched on at the mains and when
connection is established with USB.

HVPD Ltd. | Power, Charging, Fans and Vents

It is recommended to use only the BNC signal
cables that are supplied with the unit for connection
of PD sensors and accessories. These signal cables
have a 50 Ω characteristic impedance. To connect,
twist and lock the BNC cable. Ensure the cable and
its terminals are not damaged before use.

HVPD Ltd. | Signal Cables

To make PD measurements the data acquisition should be
synchronised to the 50/60 Hz voltage of the plant under test.
This can be achieved by any of the following means: the
trigger selection is made in the KST Control software.

• Line supply (when mains powered only).

• Trigger input – for example from coupling capacitor voltage
reference output.
• Internal mains field detector – this is built into the unit and
detects 50/60 Hz magnetic fields; the unit should be placed
close to the plant under test to detect this.
• Internal photodiode – this detects flicker from lights that is
synchronous to the 50/60 Hz. The mains power to the lights
should be synchronous to the high voltage of the
equipment under test. The sensor is behind the vents and
so must not be covered.

HVPD Ltd. | Power Frequency Synchronisation

1. Identify the cables and plant to be tested.

2. Connect earth cable from the HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester to the main substation
earth.

3. Connect the BNC signal cables (all of the same length) to the sensors and/or POA
box(es). Then connect the PD sensors to the plant under test

4. Connect the BNC signal cables to the HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester.

5. Connect HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester to laptop with USB cable.

6. Press the POWER ON switch on the HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester if using mains
power. Unit will auto-power up over USB if using battery power.

7. Run KST Control software and follow the software setup.

HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester | Test Setup

Controlling the HVPD Kronos® Spot Tester uses the KST Control program which can be
opened from the Windows start menu as shown below:

HVPD Ltd. | Opening the KST Control

The Main Window of the KST Control is used to configure and control the data capture
process, and view data as it is captured:

HVPD Ltd. | Main Window Overview

To start a test select the ‘Start Acquisition’ button. The ‘File Name’ menu will open and the
user will be prompted for:
• Num. Acq. (Number of power cycles to aquire data)
• Directory Name
• File Name

HVPD Ltd. | Start Acquisition

The user has two ways to Select a Directory for the test:

1. Open the ‘Create New Directory’ menu by pressing

the ‘Create’ button. From here the user can input a
new Directory Name or select from an existing
Directory to use from the HVPD data folder. Then
choose a File Name for the test.

2. Load from Existing File. The user will open a File

Manager by pressing the ‘Load’ button. From here
select a HED File in the data folder.

HVPD Ltd. | Select Directory

The user will return to the ‘File Name’ menu with the inputted Directory Name / File Name
displayed. The ‘File Exists’ checkbox indicates If the ‘Directory Name’ and ‘File Name’ are
the same as a test session that already exists. If this is the case then the following screen
will be shown when ‘Confirm’ is selected. The user then has three options;

• ‘Overwrite Existing’ – overwrites the old test file with the new test data.
• ‘Append to Existing’ – adds the new data to the existing test file.
• ‘Cancel’. Selecting append will add this data to the existing test file:

HVPD Ltd. | File Name

After the user has selected / created a Directory for the test the ‘Method Selector’ menu
will open. If this is the first time the test has been conducted, the user will be prompted to
select a ‘Method’. A Method gives a configuration of the sensors’ test setup for a HV
System. By default the user has some common Methods to choose from. These are named
based on the plant type being tested, with the sensor icons shown on the right of each
image.

HVPD Ltd. | Select Method

After this the user will be prompted to enter the session information;
• Company / Customer
• Username
• Location / Region
• Substation / Site
• Comments on Test
This information will appear automatically if provided previously, as shown below:

HVPD Ltd. | Session Information

The user will be then be taken to the default sensor configuration for the selected method:

HVPD Ltd. | Sensor Configuration

The user can edit each entry by Clicking / Double-Clicking it. The Transfer Impedance for
each channel can be set by selecting a channel and using the drop-down menu.
