Lighting Safety

December 2022
The Alerts are provided to all Drilling and Workover Operations Foremen and Liaisonmen so that we all learn from the
experiences of others. The knowledge of this incident could prevent similar ones from happening in the future.
Saudi Aramco policy requires the information in this Alert to be communicated to all crew members and documented on
morning reports.

What happened?
While handling a load on the rig floor, two workers were removing the load from the crane when lightning struck
the tip of the crane boom. Fortunately, both IPs were not injured and had minor shock only. Both IP were
transported to the sick bay for evaluation and were given precautionary treatment.

Both IP were later sent to onshore hospital for further checks and fit for work clearance.

Consequences:
• Minor shock only

Why did it happen?

Investigation is on-going and below are some possible causes:
• Rig management and crew do not fully understand the lightning risks
• Emergency Response Plan did not address lightning safety protocol
• No training provided on lightning safety
• Weather report was not shared
• Work continued despite poor weather condition

What should be done to prevent recurrence?

All drilling contractors are to follow the recommendations listed below:
• Reduce lightning hazards when working outdoors
• Develop Emergency Response Plan which include written lightning safety protocol
• Provide lightning safety training
• Provide lightning warning system
• Prohibit work during rain or high winds such as working at heights, crane operations, etc.
• Offshore /Onshore rigs shall have well-designed and well-maintained lightning protections systems as
defenses to avoid catastrophic effects that might endanger personnel and equipment.
• Risk assessment shall be conducted by contractors to determine the level of vulnerability of the rig based on
international guidelines and standards (e.g. API RP 2003 Protection Against Ignitions Arising Out of Static,
Lightning and Stray Currents, IEC 62305 Lightning Protection Standard, NFPA 780 Standard for the
Installation of lightning protection systems, etc.) to identify and implement the proper actions.
