There are two ways of reporting what somebody says:

• Direct speech: exact words of speaker and using speech marks.

She said, “I am a beautiful girl”

• Indirect speech (reported speech): without speech marks and without


necessarily using exactly the same words.

She said that she was a beautiful girl.

If the reporting verb is in the past tense in the direct speech statement,
then the verbs within the inverted commas will change in the indirect
speech statements.
