CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter consists of the overview of the study, its difficulty, objective, scope and

limitation and the significance of the study. This chapter also aims to point out the main

result of the research.

Introduction

At every stage of its development, society presents to the education system certain

requirements that meet the scientific and technological achievements of the time. In the

reform of general and higher education, the problems of scientific substantiation, content

development and teaching methods, as well as pedagogical diagnostics of learning outcomes

are very relevant in improving of the teaching and educational process. The main purpose of

the reform is to move from a school, knowledge is only given to a school of competencies

necessary for life. The research of the relationship between the competencies of students,

their intellectual abilities and their vision of further education, the use of active learning

strategies for profession choice has shown the usefulness of motivational beliefs in

understanding the choices of this future. Supporting such beliefs depends on a system of

motivational influences in formal, non-formal and informal education

Classroom educators are known to have a wide range of students’ abilities within a

year level and with this come significant planning and programming issues. Commenting on

specialized subject teaching, however, a number of SHS students in St. Francis National High

School are identified as having a specific learning difficulty specifically on their specialized

subject. But there is a divergence of views about causes and identification.

The new K to 12 curriculum proposed by the Department of Education has a big role

in guiding the student’s career by giving the learners a fundamental training and introduction

about the necessary knowledge that is essential for their chosen career path. The department

of education proposed four tracks that includes (1) The Academic Strand which includes the

Accountancy, Business and Management Strand, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics Strand, the Humanities and social sciences strand, as well as the General

Academic Strand; the (2) Technical Vocational Strand that includes the Home Economics

Strand, the TVL Maritime, the Agriculture and Fisheries Strand, and the Information and

Communications Strand; the (3) Sports Track; and the (4) Arts and Design Track.

The curriculum of the different specializations of the different strands are carefully

selected and distributed to give quality education to the Senior High School students. The

subjects offered are subdivided into three categories namely the core subjects, the applied

subjects, and the specialized subjects. Each subjects play a role in the students. The core

subjects include the general academics wherein it is taken by all the strands. The applied

subjects wherein simulations and practical subjects were included that is also taken by all the

strands. The specialized subjects are enrichment courses that includes the fundamental basics

of selected college subjects.

The success of a student's learning lies within his/her environmental factors as

hypothesized by Williams (1967). A lot of school dropouts are in parallel with this issue.

Some factors include its social and interpersonal role to his/her community. Another

important thing is the teacher-student relationship.

As SMAW students, the researchers' goal is to know and discover arrays of diverse

problems that SMAW students face earlier so that solutions may be given to the students as

an aid in facing the different challenges that an SMAW student must encounter.

Background and Overview of the Study

The reasons why the researcher conducted this research is because they want to know

the Factors Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Senior High School Students in St.

Francis National High School Towards Specialized Subject. The researchers are curious on

the Factors Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Students Towards Specialized Subject

as a student that they might experience it as well.

The objectives of the researcher are to know the Factors Affecting the Difficulties

Encountered by Senior High School Students in St. Francis National High School Towards

Specialized Subject. The researcher conducted the study in St. Francis National High School

on the 13th day of January 2022. The purpose why the researcher did this research is because

the researcher is concern in the Factors Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Students

Towards Specialized Subject.

Table 1 shows the conceptual framework of the study. The first column shows the input

Hypothesis of the Study

To provide more in-depth analysis of this study and make the finding clearer, the

inquiry tests the hypothesis.

Alternative Hypothesis

There is a significant difference in the Factors Affecting the Difficulties Encountered

by Senior High School Students in St. Francis National High School Towards Specialized

Subject according to age, sex, grade level, strand, and general average on previous year.

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the Factors Affecting the Difficulties

Encountered by Senior High School Students in St. Francis National High School Towards

Specialized Subject when grouped according to age, sex, grade level, strand, and general

average on previous year

Statement of the Problem

General Problem

The purpose of this study is to know the Factors Affecting the Difficulties

Encountered by Senior High School Students in St. Francis National High School Towards

Specialized Subject.

Specific Problem

Specifically, the study sought answers to the following questions:

1. How may the profile of the respondents be described in terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Sex;

1.3 Grade level;

1.4 Strand; and

1.5 General Average (Previous Year)

Significance of the Study

The significance of the study is to have an insight about the Factors Affecting the

Difficulties Encountered by Senior High School Students in St. Francis National High School

Towards Specialized Subject. Specifically:

To the students: Becoming aware of the situation and knowing what to do about the Factors

Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Senior High School Students Towards Specialized

Subject. The research will tackle the Factors Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Senior

High School Students Towards Specialized Subject and what they can do to avoid being put

in a similar situation. It will also create a much more enjoyable environment for everyone,

without fear or pressure.

To the Parents: Producing research that entails the Factors Affecting the Difficulties

precautionary measures to avoid such mishaps.

To the School: The community can benefit off of this research because of information that

be concluded.

Scopes and Delimitations

This study will involve the school of St. Francis National High School, specifically

the senior high school department. The students across different grade levels from grade 11 to

grade 12 students are covered as respondents on this study. The profiling information of the

respondents covers the age where it ranges from adolescents, and also sex was included to

determine the disparity of the Factors Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Senior High

School Students Towards Specialized Subject between different genders.

This study aims to deepen the students knowledge on the research about the Factors

Affecting the Difficulties Encountered by Senior High School Students in St. Francis

National High School Towards Specialized Subject.

Having random respondents will ensure that the data gathered will be non-bias and

shall be from an objective standpoint which in turn will be validated. It also allows for other

possible information that is related towards the subject in research to be included in the study

to cover a vast area for understanding.

to be relevant with the study and has been operationally defined based on connotation.

Conceptual Definition

The terminologies are as follows:

Career A state in life where a person engage

his/herself in the productivity in work by

applying his/her cognitive skills (degree) or

passion and by establishing a name in an

industry.

Core Subjects This are the general academic subjects of

Senior High School students that includes the

mathematics, the social sciences, and natural

sciences.

Curriculum A designed array of designed framework of

activities and instruction for academic

purposes provided by an educational

institution to schools.

Difficulties This difficulty was used and described in this

study as the hindrances, obstacles and

difficulties that ABM students might face in

their career.

Senior High School The last two years of the high school wherein

students will choose their degree program.

Specialized Subjects These are the subjects prepared for Senior

High School which are co-related with the

track that serves as an enrichment course to

the students that is beneficial of their college

degree.

Subject Difficulty A difficulty of a student in a certain area. This

may be affected by different factors including

the teacher-student relationship.

Teacher-Student Relationship A type of bond in between a teacher and a

student.

Core Subjects the three foundation subjects (English,

mathematics, and science) that are

compulsory throughout each key stage in the

National Curriculum

Teacher-Student Relationship is a positive relationship between the teacher

and the student in efforts to gain trust and

respect from each other.
