    3. Read the text about fertilization and answer the questions.


    Fertilisation occurs when a sperm fuses with an ovum to form a zygote.
    During the ovulation cycle, the ovary releases an egg into the Fallopian tubes.
    During sex, male ejaculation releases 300-400 million sperm cells into the vagina. These sperm
    pass into the uterus and the fallopian tube. If the sperm find an egg, they surround it and use
    enzymes to break through the outer membrane of the ovum. When this happens, their nuclei fuse
    and fertilisation takes place. Only one sperm can fuse with the egg cell.
    Once fertilised, the egg begins to divide. Then it passes through the fallopian tubes and is
    implanted in the uterus where the zygote begins to form.
    Eggs can survive in the fallopian tubes for 24-48 hours. An unfertilised egg is expelled along with
    the lining of the uterus when the woman has her next menstrual period. Sperm that don't encounter
    an ovum can survive for five days.
