Teaching Philosophies

I went into this course hoping it would give me an idea as to whether or not I wanted to

go into education in the future. Throughout this course and my field observations, I can say that I

do want to pursue this career field because it is a career that I think would find much happiness

and purpose. The one thing I have changed in my journey of becoming a teacher is the age

group. I took a class for elementary school and decided I would have a better time with an older

age group. Now seeing how much work both young and older students require, I can say that I

prefer older highschool students. During both teacher interviews I have completed, I was

inspired by how much they cared for their students. The question that asks ‘what's the best part

about being a teacher’ they both answered quickly and simply “the kids.” They went on to

explain why and their reasonings were so pure and full of joy. I feel like that is something I want

and would be able to experience through teaching.

Moving forward I still have many skills to learn. Currently the most beneficial skill I

have is my CPR certification, (handy especially when around many children) and my positive

attitude. I hope to continue to learn how to have a positive effect on students and how their

actions will reflect in the future. I am aware that entering a field like this is very demanding of

my time to ensure that the students have what they need to succeed. In life it is said that all good

things take time and effort, and this is a passion that is worth the demands.

I believe that education is important and something that should be fun and interactive.

My philosophy if I were to become a teacher would be to incorporate mindfulness techniques.

My hope is to not only teach the specific criteria that are demanded by schools but also teach

important life lessons, to show students what having a kind, peaceful, and happy mindset can do

for them. With my knowledge of how education is currently and historically taught, I think there

are a lot of issues with our education system including: the lack of diversity being represented in

schools and the availability of a quality education. While I may never be able to change all of the

issues in our education systems everywhere, let alone in a single school, I hopefully can make a

difference in some smaller amount, even if it is only one student at a time. I want to make a

difference in kids' lives and bring new ideas to schools. I understand that it is optimistic to think

that I can make significant changes right away, and on a large scale, but I think it is a process that

is important enough to try.

I hope to implement interactive work to help students learn. I want to incorporate all the

different learning styles because I feel like so much of school today uses one maybe two styles

leaving a group of students struggling to understand because it is not the most efficient way they

specifically learn.

When it comes to student diversity I would like to be able to relate to each student on

some level even if it is the small things to make sure that they feel comfortable. I have been

fortunate enough to grow up in an empathetic family and travel and experience many different

cultures and lifestyles that I believe allow me an opportunity to better relate and understand

students. I hope to create a safe environment built on mutual respect and empathy, so as to be

able to help students personally in any aspect of their life. I believe in positive reinforcement and

conversation before behavioral correction. My most recent teacher who I observed explained

how she handles punishments with her students. She said that ‘the trick with older students is

that they do not want to be infantilized, that you need to give them options and an opportunity to

choose to fix the issue themselves because that way you are allowing them the option to make

their own choices.’ I think she explained that so masterfully and I can recall having an “aww”

moment. For assessments, I would do the required curriculum, but would not go as to make

extra assessments because I want to teach for understanding, not teach to test.

Qualities I possess to move forward in this career are that I am very compassionate and

patient. I think in any profession that involves kids, people need to be able to compose

themselves and not act rashly, because it is another person that they will actively be impacting

every day. I will continue my studies to receive a degree in education with the hopes of

becoming a teacher. I look forward to getting to meet new people and learning from them so that

others can learn from me.
