Reflections: Strengths and Improvements

I want to first discuss classroom management. I have had many opportunities to

witness and experience a variety of classroom management techniques within this

wonderful education program here at Houston Baptist University. My ideal classroom

environment and management is the happy medium, as I like to call it. I want to have a

classroom management when my students and anyone walking in can tell that my class

is well organized and under control. I also want my students to feel free enough to be

able to come talk to me and know that I am their teacher, but I care about them and I

am there for them. I think classroom management starts with the teacher, but I also

think that we must be able to include the students so they can feel comfortable because

to me, classroom management that is too harsh or overboard is not a friendly inviting

environment.

I have learned more this semester in fieldwork about my strengths and areas of

improvement in teaching than any other semester because of the valuable feedback I

received. My mentor teacher was very kind in allowing me to teach a small lesson over

comparing decimals and she watched me and wrote down suggestions and

compliments for me to focus on for next time and the future. One of my major

takeaways for improvements was not to do the “heavy lifting.” That stuck with me
because I am a preservice teacher, I was not aware that I was doing that. Another

comment made to me was to pay attention to how quickly they master the topic and

provide challenging material at that point. I would have thought that I would have done

that, but in the moment, it can be harder to know when to move on to tougher work and

to be prepared because you must be flexible in case, they only take one day needing to

learn the material, but I planned out three day, or vice versa. Some of the strengths she

talked to me about was how I have a good voice and I can project it very well in an

appropriate manner. She also stated that I am very relatable and personable, and I

believe that is what gave me an extra edge when teaching my small lesson because

although the students did not know me, they were more open and engaging with me

than I would have thought, and I loved it. Lasty, she liked how I pushed for one student

to continue to think and encourage her to get the right answer, as she originally only

gave me half of the right answer.

With everything I have been able to experience I can 100% say that I still want to

be a teacher and if anything, I want to be a teacher even more. I am extremely excited

to get into my own classroom and begin to practice all these amazing techniques and

skills I have learned over the years. My passion for teaching and kids has only grown

more and more and I am very appreciative of Houston Baptist University for this

experience. I think about what I would do if I had to work and not get paid and instantly

teaching come to mind. I am blessed to be chosen for this career path. God has molded

me day by day to be the best teacher I can be, and I cannot wait to put these things into

practice.
