12th Grade English Literature/Composition

Course Description This course is designed to provide students with a challenging and enriching curriculum. The students will have numerous opportunities for writing through various compositions. Also, the student will explore themes, ideas, and some new literary devices, as English writers often employ techniques and writing styles that are somewhat unique to the British tradition. Grammar instruction will include daily correction of sentences as well as lengthier units of instruction covering topics such as clauses, modifiers, types of sentences, subordination, and parallelism. Vocabulary development will also be an integral part of the curriculum. Topics of Study The following is a general guideline of the topics we will cover in this course. However, these topics may be adapted at the teachers discretion. Literature: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama Possible Reading Selections- Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Pygmalion, Macbeth, Hamlet, Angelas Ashes, Jane Eyre, 1984, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and others Composition: personal narrative, research paper, Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, and Renaissance projects/papers Grammar: topics discussed above Vocabulary: weekly vocabulary unit - to be completed in class every Monday (quizzes on Fridays) Literary Terms: listed in notebook as assigned-quiz as assigned Anchor Activities: There is no down-time in this class. Students who complete assignments early will work on one of the following: --- Weekly vocabulary choice assignments --- Weekly Current Events article and writing topic --- Silent independent reading / nine weeks novel projects (Anchor activities will be explained in more detail during the next few weeks.) ***All students will complete weekly and nine weeks anchor activities. Any work not completed in class becomes homework.

Notebook Keeping an organized notebook is essential. A 1-2 notebook should suffice. It will need to be divided into six tabbed sections listed above under Topics of Study. **Notebook checks will occur throughout the semester be prepared! I. Grading Scale

EXAMS (INCLUDING PROJECTS, ESSAYS, ETC.): 45% HOMEWORK: 10% DAILY: 20% QUIZZES: 25% TOTAL: 100% There will be a local end of course test, which will count as 20% of the final grade. Student Progress Progress reports will be sent home in the middle of each nine-week period. These should be returned within three days with a parents/guardians signature. Make-up Work READ CAREFULLY! Students will be allowed five (5) days in which to make arrangements for making up any work due to an absence. After five days, a zero will be recorded. In order to be allowed a second chance to make up a recorded zero, the student must (in a timely manner) schedule and attend either a before-or-after-school tutoring or working session. Mrs. Exleys scheduled weekly tutoring is held every Tuesday from 3:30 4:00. ** Making up missed work is the students responsibility. II. Materials Students are expected to bring the following materials to class every day. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. Medium blue or black pen Pencils Notebook with divided sections Loose-leaf paper for all work Textbook Other reading material Portable storage device (flash drive)
