Teacher: Randy Vickery Date: November 29th

Content Area: Science Grade Level: 8

Unit Title: Physics

Lesson Idea/Topic and Introduction to energy concepts / Kinetic vs.

Rational/Relevance: potential energy.

Student Profile: Mix of above standard and below standard

learners

Content Standard(s) addressed by this lesson:

5. Kinetic energy can be distinguished from the various forms of potential energy
a. Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of
kinetic energy to the mass of an object and the speed of an object. (MS-PS3-1)
b. Develop a model to describe that when the arrangement of objects interacting at
a distance changes, different amounts of potential energy are stored in the system.
(MS-PS-3-2)

Understandings: (Big Ideas)

Students will understand:

• The definitions of energy and work.

• the difference between potential and kinetic energy.
• that the potential energy stored in an object is dependent upon its mass and the
relative position of various parts of a system.
• that the kinetic energy of an object:
o increases if either the mass or the speed of the object, or both increases,
o and decreases if either the mass or the speed of the object, or both
decreases.

Inquiry Questions:

Where does energy come from?

What are the different kinds of energy?
How might the mass of an object affect its potential energy? Position?

How does an object’s potential energy affect its kinetic energy?

Evidence Outcomes:
Every student will be able to: record data and construct a graphical representation of
the relationship between potential and kinetic energy by performing an activity using a
pendulum with various object masses, amplitudes, and string lengths.

I can: Explain the difference between potential and kinetic energy in my own words.

Describe what science happened during the pendulum activity in my own words.

This means: I have learned what energy, work, potential, and kinetic energy are.

List of Assessments:

Formative assessment “Snowball Fight” (Learning targets 1 and 2)

This shows what students have learned during the lesson and points out any
misconceptions that need to be addressed.

Anticipatory The strategy I intend to use is: Warm up journal prompt (Where
Set does energy come from?)

Short introductory presentation to energy.

I am using these strategies here because: they are strategies that

our mentor teacher uses every class period.

Anchor Activity=Pencil drop activity: This provides a kinesthetic

learning activity that has students inquire about potential and
kinetic energy.

Procedures The strategy I intend to use is: Pendulum Activity

I am using this strategy here because: It is engaging and allows
students to record data while learning about the concepts of
potential and kinetic energy, and how energy can be converted
between the two.

They will record 4 data

which independent

calculate an average.
Closure The strategy I intend to use is: Class discussion and data share

I am using this strategy here because: it allows for the students to

share their thoughts on the content.

Assessment
The strategy I intend to use is: Snowball fight

I am using this strategy here because: it is a cooperative learning

strategy that encourages students to have fun with each other and
present something they learned from the lesson to the class in a
way that doesn’t put too much pressure on them. It also allows the
teacher to collect data on what their students understood as well as
any misconceptions to be addressed.

Post Lesson Reflection

1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved? (Utilize assessment data
to justify your level of achievement)
2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you
were to teach again?

3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (Continued practice, reteach
content, etc.)

4. If you used co-teaching, would you use the same co-teaching strategy for
this lesson if you were to teach it again? Were there additional co-teaching
strategies used during the lesson not planned for initially? Please explain.
