UNIVERSITY LABORATORY SCHOOL

University of Southern Mindanao

Kabacan, North Cotabato
S.Y. 2021-2022

LESSON PLAN
Subject: Science (Biology)
Topic: Protein Synthesis: From
genes to proteins
Grade Level: Grade 8, 4th Quarter
Time Allotment: 55 minutes
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. Trace how RNA is formed by Transcription
2. Explain how protein is made using information from DNA
3. Relate the DNA base codes to the 20 amino acids that make up proteins.
Elicit (5 mins) Materials

Let the students recall the previous lesson about DNA and Laptop
replication. In a form of an activity called “CLAP, UP” TV
would test their knowledge and learnings about their PowerPoint presentation
previous lesson. Each items will serve as a review of some
important concepts about the topic.

Instructions: Students will “CLAP!” if the statement is

TRUE and“UP!” if the statement is FALSE.

1. DNA, which stands for deoxyribonucleic

acid, is found within the nucleus of every
cell. (CLAP)
2.Nucleotide is the building block of DNA.
(CLAP)
3.DNA nucleotides are composed of three
subunits: Phosphate group, deoxyribose and
nitrogenous base. (CLAP)
4. A paired nucleotide, which always occur as A-T
or G-C, and linked by hydrogen bonds. (CLAP)
5.DNA is a single stranded molecule with no helix.
The four bases are guanine, cytosine, adenine, and
uracil instead of thymine. (UP)

Engaged (10 mins) Materials

The teacher will give 3 hints, which can be a word or a Laptop

phrase, the teacher will show the students the mystery TV/ Projector
word through a series of pictures. Students will need to PowerPoint presentation
raise their hand to answer the mystery word that can be Video Clip
found in the video and they might be encounter in the Speaker
topic.

Are you now ready? Let’s now play

“Name IT, TO WIN IT!”
Example:

Explore (5 mins) Materials

Teacher will reveal the answer to the “Name IT, TO WIN

IT!” that would lead to the topic. Answers will help them
to shift to the main topic. The teacher will support/explain to
the students the missing information. Correct
misconceptions, as the need arises.

Explain (15 mins) Materials

Laptop
[The instructor will share important points and concepts to TV/ Projector
be remembered. Moreover, the instructor will perform the PowerPoint presentation
DNA replication, transcription and translation of the
genetic code]

KEYPOINTS:

*PROTEIN SYNTHESIS – this is the series of processes

involved in the production of proteins which is composed
of replication, transcription, and translation.

*ANSWER THE QUESTION WHAT, WHEN, HOW

PROTEIN SYNTHESIS HAPPEN.

*DNA REPLICATION – process of copying a DNA

molecule usually an EXACT copy of parental DNA double
helix.
*TRANSCRIPTION – process by which an RNA molecule
is produced based on a DNA template.

*TRANSLATION – process of assembling protein

molecules from the information encoded in the mRNA.

>CODONS – coding unit consists of 3 sequential bases of

mRNA
>ANTICODON (tRNA) – group of 3 bases that is
complementary to the specific mRNA codon.

[ANSWER/PERFORM THE DNA REPLICATION,

TRANSCRIPTION, AND TRANSLATION OF THE
GENETIC CODE to the students]

Example:

Elaborate (10 mins) Materials

Teacher will call 4 representative to answer a Learning modules

sample exercise on the board while others will PowerPoint presentation
answer the problem on their respective seats to Laptop
test their ability on how to synthesize DNA to TV/ Projector
protein. This would also strengthen their capability
to perform DNA replication, transcription and
translation of the genetic code.
Evaluate (5 mins) Materials
SELF CHECK
The instructor will give a short evaluation. Learning modules
PowerPoint presentation
Laptop
TV/ Projector

Extend (5 mins) Materials

The teacher will give students assignments
from their learning modules both the activity PowerPoint presentation
and the quiz about protein synthesis, which Laptop
can be found on pageS 75-76. Their outputs TV/ Projector
will be submitted through their Google
Classroom.
