Give its definition that is not less than 3 sentences. Give its meaning and purpose in the
civil industry.
Aggregates- are raw granular materials such as sand, gravel, or crushed rock – which are
the major constituents in making concrete. It serves as reinforcement to add strength to the
overall material as in concrete or asphalt. Aggregates can be considered as load-bearing
material as it distributes the load properly to the supporting ground, for example, in road
construction. It is also used as base material when making foundations.
Sand- is a mixture of small grains of rock and granular materials which can be classified as
fine, coarse, and gravelly. It is considered as major building material used in any kind of
construction work and one of the principal ingredients in making concrete. Sand is used in
making mortar, in plastering to provide smooth surface to the wall, and before laying tiles,
sand is laid with cement.
Gravel- is a loose aggregation of small, variously sized fragments of rocks and minerals.
Gravel can either be a natural resource – which is a result of weathering and erosion of rocks
by which gravel deposits are formed or it can be man-made, where heavy machinery is used
to crushed rocks (e.g. quarry). It is one of the aggregates for concrete and can provide superior
drainage when used as filling material. It can be utilize aesthetically in landscaping projects
and construction of residential and commercial premises.
Cement- an important ingredient in concrete because it binds, or holds the concrete mix
together, giving it strength. It is use in the construction of engineering structures such as
bridges, dams, roads, tunnels, etc., use in concrete for laying floors, roofs, beams, stairs,
pillars, etc., and in preparation of foundations in building structures.
Rebar- is the shortened term for reinforcing bar. It is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used
as a tension device and a reinforcement mechanism in concrete. To put it simply, rebar is a
steel bar placed inside of concrete helping it to withstand great amounts of pressure and
tension. Rebar is widely used in almost all forms of construction be it in housing construction,
road construction, construction of bridges and hydro constructions, in industrial engineering
projects, etc.
Hollow Block- is a type of concrete block with hollow space in it – that enables the masonry
to have good insulating properties against sound, heat and moisture. It is used when steel is
to be reinforced within the masonry wall. It can be used for building internal and external
walls for almost any building structures, as ground-level units such as roadside walkways,
and for specific purposes such as tree guard blocks and boundary fences.
