HOME IS WHERE

T
THE TALENT IS
ravel, they say, opens your eyes to the wonders of the world and the
diversity that it contains. But, like many other ardent travelers, I’ve also
found that travel gives you a fresh perspective of home. I consider it my
mission of sorts to introduce the marvels of Indonesia to the people I meet
in my journeys. And I wholeheartedly believe that I am able to do so since
whenever I discover a new place to visit, I also find a new angle to look back
at my home.
This fundamental idea also drives DAMAN’s mission to highlight actors,
celebrities and public figures. We go far and wide to speak to some of the
most celebrated people in show biz and at the same time we take what
we’ve learned from Hollywood and beyond to look back at how far our own
artists have moved forward. As a local magazine with a global reach, we
feel that it’s only right that we bring attention to Indonesian talent. On a
more personal level, I find it heartening to see how we’re slowly but surely
moving forward. And, more importantly, how we sometimes make huge
leaps forward.
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019

In this issue, we talk to Abimana Aryasatya, the lead actor in “Gundala,”

arguably one of Indonesia’s biggest pushes into the superhero genre and
probably—hopefully—the start of our very own cinematic universe. I don’t
think it’s too far of a stretch to say that Indonesia’s movie industry has
moved beyond “we’re trying our best” and into “we’re going to rock the
world” territory. We’ve done it in the past and we’re going to do it again—
and we’re going to do better.
Back to the issue at hand, we also have
some insightful chats with “This is Us” star
Milo Ventimiglia, James Tupper from “Big Little
Lies,” Alex Fitzalan who plays in “The Society,”
the charming Ayu Gani of “Asia’s Next Top
Model” fame and much more, including a special
collaboration we did with OPPO that really
showcases how far technology has marched on.
Happy reading!

Arts and Craft
Forget hanging your art pieces and start wearing them instead. Designers
have gone beyond their artistic visions as we celebrate the craft of fashion in
wild patterns and drawings. And it’s more than just color, but also texture,
dimension and expression combined. Valentino experimented with graphic
prints, Loewe put together shredded outers and Fendi reminds us of art

Entering this fall season, it’s the perfect time to add some jewel tones to your

attires from Berluti, Burberry, Kenzo and Off White could definitely elevate

last May, now Prada is launching Re-Nylon. The eco-friendly line of
iconic bag silhouettes is made with a progressive new nylon called

ultimate goal for Prada to switch all of its virgin nylon to recycled

six classic Prada bag silhouettes: the belt bag, the shoulder bag,
a duffle and two backpacks. The entire range is produced from
environmentally friendly materials, bearing a unique interpretation

globalized community with the launch of six limited-edition
watches dedicated to their favorite (mega)-cities: from Bern,

this more interesting is that all six watches feature the newly

Boasting a 47mm case, the watch comes with a subtle touch
from both brand. The hour hands are tipped with the BAPE logo
itself, while the seconds hand is a lightning bolt. Furthermore,
some of the dials also comes with hour numerals (three, eight
and nine in particular) that are highlighted in contrasting
colors, as a special reference to 1983, when Swatch was
established, as well as 1993, the year that BAPE was founded. All

Traces of Experiences
Let’s face it, wrinkles are unavoidable. No need to feel awful or anything: Take wrinkles as a
symbol of our journey through life and every experience we have overcome. Wrinkles are caused
by a variety of factors, such as age as well environmental factors and busy lifestyles. Sisley is going
further in its innovation and going back to the origin of behavioral aging by launching Sisleÿa
L’Intégral Anti-Âge Anti-Wrinkle Concentrated Serum for visibly smoother skin.
The serum will help act against all types of wrinkles, will smooth the surface of the skin with Cacao
Porcelana extract, a new Sisley active ingredient that is rich in polyphenolds acts to awaken and boost
the skin’s anti wrinkle potential. And working from deep inside the skin is a combination of powerful
plant-based ingredients (Soy Peptide, Blue Agave Yeast, White Willow Leaf, Rosehip and Iris Extracts)
that act on different levels within the skin. Wrinkles and fine lines are visibly smoothed and facial
features are relaxed. The end result? A visibly younger looking face. Now, who wouldn’t want that?

A Fresh Start
What if you could reset your skin overnight, erase the impact of stress
and fatigue from the day and wake up each morning feeling refreshed and

Feel the Poem

Using perfume as a poem, Floraïku is definitely one of a kind. The
luxury fragrance brand was created in 2017 by John and Clara Molloy, the
same duo behind Memo Paris. Floraïku is inspired by Asian ceremonies
and poetry, in particular Japanese haiku poetry. Just like haiku, Floraïku
fragrance compositions are short, sensual and striking. Each eau de perfume
is distinguished by a key guiding note – a flower, a tea or a wood – inspired
by the the ceremonies they form a part of.
Floraïku has a total of 15 fragrance collection and each perfume is
expressed as a haiku, engraved on the back of the bottle. Unveiled in a case
inspired by a Japanese bento box, each 50ml fragrance is accompanied by
an intricately designed purse spray that also serves as a cap. Floraïku just

Feeling Green
Inspired by a ancient Greece myth, Dyptique launches a new fragrance from the Les Eaux line - Eau de
Minthé. According to the Greek mythology, Minthé was a water nymph who had an affair with Hades, the
god of the underworld. When Persephone found out, Minthé was turned into mint - the aromatic plant with
the well-known aroma. Eau de Minthé is the story of a metamorphosis, a mythological dream in which mint
is reinvented as a perennial scent.
In this fragrance, Dyptique reinvents an emblematic perfumery accord, fougère, drawing on the scent
of mint. Exuding mint from Oregon, the fragrance is also accentuated by nutmeg and patchouli for adding
depth to the composition. Instead of lavender, which is typically used for fougère perfumes, Dyptique uses
the floral notes of rose and geranium for this one. Eau de Minthé is available at The Papilion.
Irish Mornings 39

Taking inspiration from the winds, the emerald green grass and the horses of Ireland, this is The Iris
Leather from Memo Paris. A short introduction might be necessary here: Memo Paris is a Parisian fragrance
house launched in 2007 by Clara and John Molloy. They see fragrance as a journey, forging its identity
around magical destinations and potent raw materials.
Created by perfumer Aliénor Massenet, Irish Leather starts off with biting leather with opening notes
of juniper, pink pepper and clary sage then whisks us away to the wild countryside with the sharp leather
and green earthy feel. Comforting yet forlorn, stark yet vibrantly beautiful, Irish Leather is one of the most
wonderfully wearable leather one can experience. Discover the collection at Glow Living Beauty.

Paying tribute to the perfume culture of the Middle East, Louis
Vuitton presents Le Sable Roses. The latest addition to Louis Vuitton’s
fragrance journey brings together rose, oud and ambergris in a vibrant and
contrasting composition. The rich perfume culture of The Middle East has
provided Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud with limitless source
of inspiration and ideas.
Belletrud sources the most precious ingredients from the four corners of
the world and strives to enhance them in each of his creations. He brings
this vision to life with Les Sables Roses, a hot-and-cold composition whose

A True Icon
The new Breitling Navitimer 1 Automatic 41 effortlessly blends
features from the brand’s most celebrated watch family with an
understated design that makes it an instant classic in its own right.
With Breitling’s familiar circular slide rule and distinctive beaded
bidirectional bezel, a 41mm stainless-steel case and a clean three-
hand dial, the Navitimer 1 Automatic 41 is a stylish complement to
any wardrobe. Powered by the Breitling Caliber 17, an automatic

The Art of Racing

TAG Heuer Carrera has always been the timepiece for racecar drivers as
much as it is for watch aficionados who treasure timepieces with heritage
and innovative design. Now, the revamped 41mm TAG Heuer Carrera
Calibre 16 combines performance with a sporty, distinguished appearance
for a timepiece that is as functional and comfortable as it is fashionable.
The newly designed features make this refreshed timepiece stand out from
its stylish predecessors. Case in point: The dial comes in sunray black or
sunray blue, and has also evolved to become even more legible. On the
other hand, the counters on the chronograph’s three sub-dials are larger
and more pronounced. These new stylistic enhancements to the legendary
TAG Heuer Carrera give it a more modern edge that not only improves the
legibility of the dial, but also makes it ideal for everyday style—from in the
office to a casual weekend on the go.

Building on the success of the new L.U.C Quattro design unveiled in 2018,
this elegant, ultra-slim timepiece welcomes a new pared-down dial. After
a 2018 edition featuring a silver-toned vertical satin-brushed dial with blue
hands and hour-markers framed by a rose gold case, Chopard presents its
L.U.C Quattro watch in a vertical satin-brushed green dial framed by a white
gold case. Its two pairs of stacked barrels endow this certified chronometer
with a 216-hour power reserve, while taking up remarkably little space given
that it measures just 3.7mm thick. This new L.U.C Quattro is completed with a
“Poinçon de Genève” certification, a unique color, as well as the modern spirit
of its redesigned dial and elegant profile, which surely meet the aspirations of
the modern-day gentleman.

The Undisputed Icon

This year, at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie
(SIHH), Cartier decided that the next chapter in the Santos de
Cartier’s history would involve a high-autonomy quartz movement.
In updating this legendary timepiece, the design studios under
Cartier chose to focus on practicality, as it was a decisive factor in
the history of the Santos-Dumont watch. For one, Cartier enhanced
its ease of use by introducing a high-efficiency quartz movement with
an autonomy of approximately six years—twice as long as traditional

movements. To achieve this feat, the Cartier Manufacture reworked
and resized the movement to reduce its energy consumption
combining this with a new high-performance battery. Furthermore,
the one thing that has always been one of the defining elements
in the history of the Santos de Cartier is the strap. This time,
the new watch is completed with an understated, pared-down

the white gold “Jumbo” model at this year’s Baselworld fair. The
very embodiment of modern sporty-chic, the 42.2mm men’s white

khaki green design. This audacious choice of color evokes a sense of
adventure and far horizons, while the rounded octagonal case and

Iconic Tribute
More than just a vintage inspired watch, the A384 Revival from
Zenith is a historically-accurate recreation of one of the most
emblematic chronographs ever made. With its retro-futuristic styling,
timeless proportions and emblematic chronograph calibre, the A384
is the final piece in the El Primero 50th Anniversary Revival series.
For this watch, the brand sought to preserve and reproduce just
about everything from the original A384 from 1969. As a final touch
from the brand, the only differences—or rather improvements—are
the sapphire crystal instead of acrylic glass, the transparent back
replacing the solid steel caseback, and the latest version of the El

century of gradual fine-tuning and perfecting.

UNLOCK YOUR
CREATIVITY
A breakthrough in photography and mobile
entertainment, the new OPPO Reno phone
is undoubtedly 2019’s “it” gadget, not only
for photographers, gamers and technology
enthusiasts, but just for about everybody. This is
a phone that was made to let everyone express
their minds, ideas and interests freely, thereby
unlocking the full extent of their creativity.
Its key feature, the 10x Hybrid Zoom,
combines three powerful lenses: the 48MP
ultra-clear main camera, 13MP telephoto lens
and 8MP wide-angle. This setup allows you to
zoom in at 10x magnification and take amazing
pictures without noise or hassle. And making
the tri-lens more mind-blowing is the dual OIS
image stabilizer.
“The OPPO Reno series has a Sony IMX 586
48MP ultra-clear camera. Its ultra-large sensors
and aperture that are equipped with Multi
Frame Noise Reduction (MFNR) and High-
dynamic-range (HDR) settings create stunning
professional images in low-light conditions,”
says photographer Vicky Tanzil. “And with a
48MP super HD lens it produces the highest
resolution and greatest color accuracy. I am
very impressed!”
What’s more, the phone boasts a large-
capacity battery and charging speed that is
twice as fast as regular charging technology.
The OPPO Reno series come in two variants:
the OPPO Reno and the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom,
both featuring unique and deluxe designs. To
say that the OPPO Reno is amazing is essentially
an understatement.

The LG Gram 14 2-in-1 really knows what a

feature. The trackpad and speakers of the Gram 14

stylus (or a portable mouse) can help with the latter

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN
Stars Milo Ventimiglia, Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried
Director Simon Curtisr

“The Art of Racing in the Rain” is a heartfelt tale based on a best-selling novel by
Garth Stein. What makes it special, it’s narrated by a witty and philosophical dog named
Enzo, who is voiced by Kevin Costner. The story follows Enzo’s owner, Denny Swift (Milo
Ventimiglia), an aspiring Formula One race car driver through his journey of life, love and
loss. Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition and understands that
the techniques on the racetrack can also be used to navigate the journey of life. While
Enzo and Denny bond over their love of race car driving, they also grow as a family when
Denny meets and marries Eve (Amanda Seyfried). Wouldn’t be surprised if this movie will
have tear-shedding moments here and there.

an aged and well-travelled look.

Diving into the Past

All in all, this year’s Black Bay Bronze is a
perfect example of how Tudor combines its rich
heritage—in this case, 60 years’ worth of divers’
watches—with modern watchmaking know-
how to create timeless watches that pay tribute
to the past while remaining firmly anchored in
the present. And while the case, as elaborated
on above, is central to this idea, the “taking
historical aesthetics and updating them” then
runs across the entire watch.
Let’s start with the dial. As befitting of a
Black Bay model, the Black Bay Bronze sports
a dial inspired by those found on divers’ watches
created by Tudor in the 1950s. This particular
dial comes in slate-gray and is gradient from the

exterior to the center. Gold accents on the bezel,

hands and hour markers provide a remarkable
play of contrasts.
The strap of the watch, meanwhile, forms
another tribute to Tudor’s naval heritage. Back
in the day, the French navy would order Tudor
watches without bracelets so that they could
fit them with their own straps, sometimes
handmade. One such strap found in the brand’s
archives is made from elastic recovered from
rescue parachutes and features a distinctive
golden thread. Inspired by this historic creation,
Tudor has created a slate-gray woven jacquard
strap for the Black Bay Bronze. Alternatively,
wearers can opt for a similarly rustic aged black
leather strap.

or fall/winter 2019, artistic director of
Louis Vuitton’s men’s wear collection,
Virgil Abloh, took inspiration from the
iconic figure of Michael Jackson. Aside from
his controversial private life, the late Michael
Jackson provided a wealth of creative ideas
through his music and fashion styles. A powerful
advocate for inclusivity, Jackson was never bound

to a particular notion of race, gender or sexuality.

On a more practical note, Jackson’s iconic fashion
styles highlighted his love for royal military
garments, wide-brim fedoras, sleek loafers
and loads of sparkle, while his personality that
reflected a Peter Pan naiveté added another layer
of sartorial stimulus.
As inspiration for the collection, this Jackson
leitmotif could have resulted in costumey looks
or a parodic homage to the King of Pop. But
under Abloh’s deft hands, it was a theatrical
template within which he worked wonders.
Adopting the right elements, Abloh presented
a cohesive collection that showcased his ability
to mix high-fashion aesthetic with an elevated
streetweat sensibility that he is famous for.
In tune with the fall/winter season, outer wear
and suits dominates the collection, with a play of
layering and loose, baggy silhouettes. Showcasing

zoot suits, refreshes an early-eighties references.
The color palette, presented in monochromatic
ensembles, featured various shades of grays,
browns, blacks and whites, punctuated with bold
purples and reds which are colors most associated
with Jackson. The motifs and prints in the
collection are exceptional such as the cartoonish
illustrations that were seen on pajamas and the
houndstooth motif that, on closer inspection,
is made up of miniaturized maps of Africa.
Another standout print is the multi-national
flags print inspired by “We Are The World.”

to Ghana; Scotland to South Korea), the

communicating origin and unification.” This flag
motif also perfectly expressed the maison’s DNA
in the art of travel.
As expected from Louis Vuitton, luxurious
fabrications and techniques were apparent in
the collection. Leather cuffs embossed to form

shirts, as well as the aforementioned houndstooth
chequered from tiny Africas, highlighted the
maison’s savoir-faire.
The leather goods and accessories of the
collection, like in seasons past, are incredibly
covetable. The maison’s favorite men’s bags, such
as the Keepall bag, Steamer bag and Christopher
backpack, were presented in various sizes and
new looks in tune with the season’s inspiration.
While the Louis Vuitton monogram are present,
new hues like fuchsia, neon yellow and red, were
incorporated for the bags. The luggage pieces
became the star of the show, featuring Abloh’s
trademark chains of last season alongside the
introduction of rainbow and flag motifs that
also appeared on the different bags in the
collection. As for footwear, Abloh brought his
classic streetwear touch by debuting new sneaker

silhouettes, taking on a retro-futuristic aesthetic
that merged Vuitton’s luxury background with
Abloh’s streetwear roots.
Any successful businessman knows that
when it comes to business, the best source of
feedback—and some would say the only feedback
that one can trust—is sales. From the remarkable
figures of his debut collection for Louis Vuitton,
and the exciting new collection that is sure to
continue his successful tenure for the French
fashion giant, it is now safe to say that Abloh’s
success as the creative driving force behind Louis
Vuitton wasn’t simply down to excellent luck and
powerful branding, but come from his ability
to create something that is much desired by the
market today.
