Solve the following:

1. The two short sides of a right triangle are 5cm and 3cm. Find the
length of the third side.

GIVEN: a = 3cm b= 5cm c=?

Solution:
c 2=a2+ b2

c 2=3 2 cm+52 cm
2
c =9 cm+25 cm

c =34 cm
2

√ c 2=√ 34cm
c=¿ 5.83095 cm or 5.83 cm

2. Classify a triangle whose dimensions are 5m, 7m, and 9m.

ANSWER: SCALENE TRIANGLE

5m 9m

7m

3. Find the size of a computer screen whose dimensions are 8 inches

and 14 inches. Hint: The diagonal of the screen is its size.
SOLUTION:
2 2 2
a + b =c
2 2 2
8 +b =c
2
64+ 196=c

260=c 2

√ 260= √c 2
2 √ 65=c

ANSWER: 16.12 inches or 16 inches

4. Prove that triangle is a right triangle if the length of the sides are 8mm,
15mm and 17mm.

GIVEN:
8mm = Leg A
15mm = Leg B
17mm = Hypotenuse

SOLUTION:
2 2 2
a + b =c

82 +152 =c 2
64+ 225=289

Since the sum of the legs equals the hypotenuse, it is a right triangle.
5. The hypotenuse of a triangle is 17in and one side is 11in. Find the other
side.
SOLUTION:
2 2 2
a + b =c
112 +b2=17 2
121+b2 =289
2
b =289−121
2
b =168

√ b2= √168
b=2 √ 42

Final Answer: 12.96 in or 13 in
