Differentiation This lesson is designed to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. It
Strategies meets the needs of all learning styles, as well as my struggling students and my
gifted students. All students will read texts that are differentiated for them.
Learning Styles:
 Visual Learners: Visual learners will have the opportunity to learn
through presentation. They will also have several chances to watch
videos and watch others retell stories.
 Auditory Learners: Auditory learners will learn best by listening to the
content explaination. The partner work will benefit these learners by
listening to their partner’s perspective.
 Kinesthetic Learners: Kinesthetic learners will be provided with many
hands-on activities. They will have the chance to use picture cards to
retell Moana. They will also have the opportunity to retell a story through
drawing and design.
Special Needs Learners:
I have a student who has a developmental disability. He can actively participate
in class on his own, as long as there is no writing. He will need extra support on
assessments and our project. I will work with him one-on-one when necessary.
To provide additional assistance, I will have one of my gifted learners sit next to
him to ensure he is okay while I am helping other students or explaining the
material.

To catch the students attention, we will begin our lesson by discussing the
characters one of my students favorite movies, Moana. This activity will connect
the students background knowledge of characters to the new content.
1. To begin this lesson, I will play a short snipit of a song from Moana, “Your
Welcome.” This should catch my students attention immediately!
2. Next, we will review the term “character.” We will then briefly discuss the
characters that are in the movie. Some examples of characters in Moana
are Moana, Maui, and Hei Hei. In my presentation, I will have a display of
characters from the movie Moana.
3. Together, we will complete a character sort. We will sort characters into
the smiling box, and we will create “not characters” into the sad face.

2. What is a character?
3. Where might we find characters?

Engagement To assess the students engagement, I have them complete a short character

Exploration
1. First, we will begin the exploration phase by having the students
brainstorm the plot of Moana.
2. Next, the students will be given picture cards of scenes from the movie.
They will work with their shoulder partner to put the scenes in order.
3. Then, the students must explain to their shoulder partner what is
happening in each picture.
4. Once, the students are both done, they will need to get one of our
classroom iPads.
5. They will record a quick video using Flipgrid explaining their pictures and
what happened in the movie.

Exploration To assess the student’s knowledge after the exploration activity, I will review

ability to retell a story.

Explanation
1. To begin, I will briefly retell what happens in Moana.
a. Maui, a demigod, steals a mystical heart from a goddess named
Ti Fiti. The heart that he stole has the power to create life.
However, he lost it in a battle with Te Ka, the lava monster.
b. Over a 1000 years later, Moana is chosen by the sea. Her
grandmother tells her ancient stories about Maui and shows her
hidden boats.
c. Moanas island begins struggling immensely. Things are dying and
there is no food.
d. Moana sets said on a boat to find Maui and restore the universe.
e. She finds Maui who is very self-centered. They form a bond and
he helps her navigate.
f.When they got to the island, Te Ka (the lava monster) strikes
again. It breaks Mauis hook and he loses all of his power.
g. Moana finds the heart of Te Fiti. She realized that Te Ka was Te
Fiti without her heart. The islands come back to life!
2. Next, I will introduce the term “retell” using a slide in my Canva
presentation. I will explain how they just practiced retelling in their Flipgrid
videos. We will talk about the necessary characteristics of retelling.
3. The students will then discuss the term “key details.” I will give an
example to the class.

4. Then, they will work together to design a poster. The poster will retell the
story using their illustrations. They will only use key details.
5. Then, the students will use our iPads to upload their poster into our class
Canva presentation. This gives every student access to the other
posters.
6. The students will then flip through the other students posters. Students
will have the opportunity to present their poster.
