Non-Verbal Communication

Nonverbal messages are typically more spontaneous than verbal messages.

The Mehrabian model shows that only 7% of the meaning communicated by most messages
comes from the verbal portion, with the remaining 93% (55% body language, and 28% Voice- tone,
pitch, etc.) being conveyed nonverbally.

Nonverbal communication is the oral and non-oral messages expressed by other than linguistic
means.
It includes messages transmitted by vocal means that don’t involve language – sighs, laughs, and
other utterances.

Examples of non-verbal communication:

Body movement or gestures, including small and unintended movements may mean something

to other people.

Physical appearance also means a lot. Are you dressed formally or informally, neatly or sloppily?

The color of your attire also sends out a message.

Your voice can mean boredom, excitement, doubt, certainty etc.

Touch communicates a lot. But this is something that should be avoided in the workplace.

Space and territory include one’s position and distance while communicating with someone.

The time spent to communicate may also be interpreted in many ways. Example: When one

spends only a minute or two, it may be interpreted as rushing or in hurry and this could further

mean either urgency or the communication is unimportant.

FAQs

1. Is sign language non-verbal communication?

NO! Since non-verbal is the oral and non-oral messages expressed by other than linguistic
approaches, this rules out not only written words but also sign language, since sign language has a
linguistic interpretation or correspondence.

2. Why could the voice be non-verbal?

There is more to our voice than what we say. For instance, we can say “I’m not mad”, but the volume
of our voice may say otherwise. Remember, how we say things could either support or negate what
we say.
