B. Preliminary Activities

1. Review

So, class what was our lesson yesterday?

- Ma’am our lesson yesterday is

D. Lesson Proper

1. Presentation
For today’s lesson we are going to discuss
about solving problems involving quadratic
equations. Before we proceed, kindly read our
learning objectives first

At the end of the lesson, the learners

will be able to:
(The teacher projects the problem in the screen.) a. Solve problems involving quadratic
equations
2. Discussion b. Illustrate/Show the solution to the
given problem
The concept of quadratic equations is
illustrated in many real-life situations.
Problems that arise from these situations,
such as those involving area, work, profits,
and many others, can be solved by applying
the different mathematics concepts and
principles previously studied including
quadratic equations and the different ways of
solving them. .
Class, please read the problem.

What is the problem about? What is - Example 1: A rectangular table

has an area of 27 ft 2 and a
asked?
perimeter of 24 ft. What are
the dimensions of the table?
Do you know how to solve this
problem?
- The problem is about the
3. Guide Practice dimension of the table

The product of the length and width of the

rectangular table represents its area. Hence,
- No, Ma’am
length (1) times width (w) = 27 or LW = 27.

Also, twice the sum of the length and the

width of the table gives the perimeter. Hence,
21 + 2w = 24.

If we divide both sides of the equation 21 +

2w = 24 by 2, then / + w = 12.

We can think of LW = 27 and L+ W = 12 as

the equations representing the product and
sum of roots, respectively, of a quadratic
equation. Remember that if the sum and the
product of the roots of a quadratic equation
are given, the roots can be determined. This
can be done by inspection or by using the
2 b c −b
equation x + +¿ =0 , where is the sum
a a a
c
of the roots and is the product.
a

By inspection, the numbers whose product is

27 and whose sum is 12 are 3 and 9.

Product: 3 •9 = 27

Sum: 3 ÷ 9 = 12

The roots of the quadratic equation then are 3

and 9. This implies that the width of the table
is 3 ft. and its length is 9 ft. (students listen attentively)
Another method of finding the roots is to use
2 b c −b b
the equation x + +¿ =0 . Let =12∨¿
a a a a
c
= -12 and = 27. Then substitute these values
a
in the equation.

b c
x 2+ +¿ =0 → x2 + ( 12 ) x+27=0
a a

x−3=0∨x −9=0

x=3∨x=9

Solve the resulting equation x 2+ 12 x +27=0

using any of the methods of solving quadratic
equation.

x 2+ 12 x +27=0→ ( x −3 ) ( x −9 )=0 - Yes, Ma’am

x−3=0∨x −9=0

x=3∨x=9 (students raised their hands)

With the obtained roots of the quadratic
equation, the dimension of the table then are 3
ft. and 9 ft., respectively
Do you understand?

Thankyou for your sharing your experience

6. Application
For today’s activity, you will be working in
groups which I have assigned before we
started our class. We have 3 groups and each
group will work on a specific problem.

Now, proceed to your groupmates silently and

form a circle.

The activity is good for 15 minutes. You

need to choose a leader, two members who
are in-charge in presenting an illustration of
the given problem and two members who are
in-charge in making the presentation of the
solution using the materials I have provided.
The leader will be the one to facilitate the
group and at the same time who will report
the group output.

Solve each problem involving quadratic

equations. Show the complete solution.
- Yes ma’am

To the leaders kindly come and get your

problems based on your group number.

Are you now ready to perform the group - Yes, Ma’am

activity?

Group 1

The length of a rectangular garden is 6 more

than the width. The area is 27 sq. units. Find
the dimension of the garden.

Group 2
Determine two consecutive negative even
numbers whose product is 24?

Group 3
A rectangle has a length that is 2 less than 3
times the width. If the area of this rectangle
is 16, find the dimension and the perimeter

Are you class done?

IV – Evaluation
Solve problem involving quadratic equations. Show the complete solution.

The length of a rectangular garden is 6 more than the width. The area is 27 sq. units.
