Topic Presentation

A. Classification of matter on the basis of physical states

Solid Liquid Gas
B. Classification of matter based on chemical composition
1. Pure substance - has a fixed composition and unique set of properties.
2. Mixture - compose of 2 or more substances.
Ex. Classify as pure substance or mixture
a. pure water b. copper c. soy sauce d. hydrogen
C. Properties of matter
1. Intensive properties - properties that do not depend on the amount and
size of the sample involved
2. Extensive properties - are those that do not depend on the size of the
sample involved
Ex. Classify as intensive or extensive property
a. color b. luster c. boiling point d. weight e. volume
D. Changes in matter
1. Physical changes - changes that do not result in the production of a new
substance
2.Chemical changes - changes that result in the production of another
substance
Ex. Classify as physical or chemical changes
a. burning b. broken bottle c. photosynthesis d. bending
E. Law of Conservation of Mass - States that matter is neither created nor
destroyed in chemical reactions;
It simply changes form Ex. 2H2 + O2 ------ 2H2O
..
. . + O O ------- ____________
2(2 x 1.0g) + 2(16.0g) = 2(2 x 1) + (1 x 16.0)
4.0g + 32g = 2(2 + 16)
= 2(18)
36g = 36g
