Please note that the following is intended as a general guide. Your own particular case may differ
from the norm and therefore require further evaluation. If you have any questions, please contact
us.
Unlike Canadian citizenship, Italian citizenship depends first and foremost on the parents’
citizenship at the time of birth of the applicant rather than on the applicant’s place of birth.
Italian citizenship is transferred from one generation to the next, provided that no other citizenship
is acquired. For example, if your paternal or maternal grandfather was an Italian citizen, your father
or mother born abroad would also be considered Italian. They would however, need to be officially
recognised as Italian citizens before your own application could be processed.
Recognition of Italian citizenship is intended for those who technically are already Italian citizens,
but have neither been recognised nor registered as such.
AS A GENERAL RULE, YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR RECOGNITION OF ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP IF:
your parent/s was/were Italian (or dual) citizens at the time of your birth
(before January 1st, 1948, citizenship could be trasnferred only through the father, after this date either parent can
transfer it)
and
you did not acquire any other citizenship prior to August 15th , 1992.
If you are a resident of Ontario, Manitoba or the Northwest Territories you may submit your
application in person to the Consulate in Toronto or to one of the liaison offices (check our
webpage for the address). If you do not live within this jurisdiction, please contact your own local
Italian Consulate (check our webpage for the address).
The application form and the list of required documents are available on pages 2 and 3. For further
information please contact:
