Unfolding the Power of Technology in the Nursing Workplace: Reflection

Paper

The Philippine healthcare system is not as advanced as that of other

countries. We lack many hospital equipment needed by healthcare professionals to

provide the best possible care to the clients. Despite this situation of our country, I

am still amazed by how our current healthcare technologies became a partner of

healthcare professionals in modern medicine. I am always in awe by how these

technologies opened an era where health management improved significantly.

The webinar organized last May 25, 2022 by the sophomore nursing students

of Visayas State University, has allowed me to see the nursing world from a new

perspective. That webinar enabled me to differentiate the difference between the

healthcare system abroad and in our country. In the United Kingdom for example --

where the speaker Ms. Durog works -- has hospital equipment that I have not seen

or heard of before. Despite working in a public hospital far from the capital of the

United Kingdom, Ms. Durog used technologies very advance for me which are very

helpful in the efficiency of the nursing workflow. Those technologies they used in the

United Kingdom shows how advance the healthcare system in other countries are

compared to ours. In the Philippines, most of our task are done manually: written

notes, record, etc., and this takes time because we don’t have the equipment to use.

This shows how our country is behind in terms of technologies and this is

disheartening for me. As a future nurse, I believe that our country must integrate

informatics in our healthcare system department because it is very timely with our

current situation, and integrating informatics would significantly improve our

healthcare situation. To integrate informatics in our healthcare system department, I

believe we can do it by improving the foundation of informatics through modifying

and improving curriculum in all medical schools. Our country must also provide free

seminars and training among healthcare professional to keep them abreast and well-

informed in the needs of our time.

The takeaway points that I gained from the activity is that working abroad or in

large hospitals where advanced technologies are present is indeed scary and

exhausting. But not because fear is present means that we must not dare to

experience it. As nurses or future nurses we should have courage in trying new

things if it means doing so will help us grow as professionals and servant leaders.

The webinar we attended was very informative and interactive. Everyone had the

chance to address their inquiries and all questions answered by the speaker. The

interaction and information I gained from our honored speaker Ms. Durog, indeed

allowed me to have a peek at the reality within the nursing workplace. The things

that I learned from that webinar range from the different healthcare technologies,

training required before working in big hospitals, struggles in working abroad, and

the different ways to cope with obstacles present in the nursing world.

Indeed, that webinar is an experience I can’t exchange with anything. I

learned a lot from the speaker and I motivated to do more to achieve competence in

this field.
