Introduction

• The ubiquitous term literate is defined as one’s ability


to read and write.
• This definition that span many generations and still
being thought in schools until today.
• However, the latest technological advancement has
brought about a new kind of learning, that is a learning
that is not dependent on just books nor on writing.
• Thus, that is, the 21st century literacies.

MULTICULTURAL LITERACY

Globalization Literacy 1
 Aims to address issues of globalization,
racism, diversity and social justice (Guo,
2014).
 It requires awareness and action, consistent
with a broad understanding of humanity, the
planet, and the impact of human disposition to
both.

Multicultural Literacy 2
Consists of the ability to identify the creators of
knowledge and their interests (Banks, 1996), to
uncover the assumptions of knowledge, to view
knowledge from diverse ethnic and cultural
perspective, and to use knowledge to guide action
that will create a humane and just world (Boutte,
2008), of humanity, the planet, and the impact of
the human disposition to both.

Social Literacy 3
 Is the understanding of social skills,
organization skills, and communication skills. It
is the ability to connect with those around
them.
 There is a need to acquire social skills that are
addition to the norms of the current society
 Emotional intelligence must also be developed
to be able to effectively manage the stress of
the fast-paced 21st century society.

Media Literacy 4
 This involves understanding and using mass
media in either an assertive or non-assertive
way, including an informed and critical
understanding of media, what techniques they
employ and their effects.
 It is also the ability to read, analyze, evaluate,
and produce communication in a variety of
media forms.

 Teachers and learners are expected to be
knowledgeable and skilled in the area of
communication, particularly the media.
 They must learn how to discern news and
information based on the form of content as
to how this information are transmitted
through by a various forms of media.

Financial Literacy 5
• Understanding the topic of money. It
represents one area of financial wellness. It
helps improve a person’s confidence,
sentiment and may help them make better
decisions.
• There is a need to know the basics of
economics and financial management. This
way, teachers can extend the skill into
livelihood activities, entrepreneurship and
wise handling of personal finances.

Cyber/Digital Literacy 5
• This is the ability to use digital technology,
communication tools or networks to locate,
evaluate, use, and create information.
• It also refers to the ability to understand
and use information in multiple formats
from a wide range of sources.
• This competency is based on the reality that
the societies and workplaces have now
become more information-driven.

• Workplaces of the 21st century rely heavily
on electronic (digital forms) of data storage
and management as well as in the area of
communications.
• Therefore, there is a need to develop
familiarity and skills in the use of
computers, the internet and other
information technologies.

Eco-literacy 6
• This is the ability to understand the
natural systems that make life on earth
possible.
• It is the power that comes from the
knowledge and consciousness of how
nature’s living systems operate.

• Entails acquiring knowledge about climate
change, pollution, loss of natural habitats,
and biodiversity, as well as the impact of
environmental problems on human lives.
• Moreover, solutions on how these
environmental problems could be
addressed must also be practiced.

Arts and Creativity Literacy 7
• This is the knowledge and understanding
required to participate authentically in
the arts.
• This literacy can be manifested in
creative ways of problem solving and
expressed through the production of
various art works.
