Duty Engineer shall ensure that the established watch is properly maintained. He is responsible for
the safe and proper operation of all main and auxiliary machinery. He will ensure for the isolation and
adjustment off all machinery under his responsibility that is to be worked on, and shall record all work
carried out. Under his general direction engine room ratings (part of the watch), shall assist him in
safe and efficient operation of the propulsion machinery and the auxiliary equipment.

At the commencement of the watch, the current operational parameters and condition of all the
machinery shall be verified. Any machinery not functioning properly, or showing signs of impending
malfunction or requiring special service, shall be noted along with any action already taken. Plans
shall be made for any further action if required.

Duty engineer shall ensure that the propulsion plant and auxiliary systems are kept under constant
surveillance. Inspections are made of the machinery and steering gear spaces at suitable intervals
and appropriate action is taken to remedy any malfunction discovered.

All bridge orders shall be promptly executed. Changes in direction or speed of the main engine shall
be recorded. The duty engineer shall ensure that main engine controls are continuously attended
under standby or maneuvering conditions.

When engine is put in standby condition, duty engineer shall ensure that all machinery and equipment
which may be used during maneuvering is in a state of immediate readiness and that an adequate
reserve of power is available for the steering gear and other deck machinery requirements.

Every member of the watch shall be familiar with his assigned watch keeping duties. In addition,
every member shall have
a) Knowledge of the use of appropriate internal communication systems.
b) Knowledge of escape routes from machinery spaces.
c) Knowledge of engine room alarm systems and the ability to distinguish between the various alarms
especially the CO2 release alarm.
d) Knowledge of the positions and uses of the fire-fighting equipment in the machinery spaces.

Duty Engineer shall ensure that all alarms are properly set and operational and any deficiencies shall
be reported to the Chief Engineer.

Pay particular attention to all safety precautions and safety devices to reduce the risk of injury or
casualty to a minimum.

Revolutions and power settings indicated by the Chief Engineer must not be exceeded.

Remember to make frequent inspections of the Engine room, boilers and auxiliary spaces paying
particular attention to separators, pressures, water levels, gauge readings, bearing temperatures,
lubricating & feed water systems.

Inspect the steering gear machinery regularly and log it down. The Chief Engineer must be informed
immediately at the first indication of trouble, breakdown or machinery defects.

In the event of an emergency, do not hesitate to sound the alarm to summon all engineer officers to
the engine room. Notify duty officer on bridge.

Take all precautions to avoid any oil spills and observe Marpol regulations strictly.

Fill in the Engine room logbook with all-relevant entries, serious occurrences, machinery damage, L.O
consumption, etc. Do not erase an incorrect entry but draw a line through it, initial and make the
correct entry. Do not use any type of correcting fluid. Before going off watch the duty engineer shall
ensure that all events related to main and auxiliary machinery are suitably recorded.

Make sure that exhaust boiler manual soot blow is done at 12 hrs intervals and observe for thermal
boiler temperature for cut in.

After completions of work make sure that all watertight doors are shut off and the Oxygen and
Acetylene gases are shut off and the welding power is off.

Make sure to take regular rounds on the A/C compressor room and fridge room and relevant log filled
up. Check locally cold room temperatures.

Emergency and critical equipment routines are to be regularly carried out and recorded.

All D.B. tanks and cofferdams are to be sounded and recorded daily.

Except when in use all D.B.tanks sounding pipes, self-closing valves and screw caps should be in
closed position. Except when in use for checking contents, all oil tanks gauge glass self closing
isolating valves should remain closed.

No alarm should be made “OFF SCAN” without the permission of the chief engineer.

All garbage including plastic should be collected separately & stored for disposal to ashore.

Following are important instructions as guidance for follow up in daily routines.

1. All log books prescribed by the company should be up to date at all times.
2. All emergency equipments will be tried out every Saturday.
3. Engine Room bilges should be pumped to bilge tank for proper settling. Bilge tank will be pumped
overboard only through bilge oil separator and Chief Engineer to be informed before starting this
operation and wheel house to be consulted regarding the position of the ship.
4. All Engine Room staff will use personal protection gear at all times in the Engine Room.
5. Hot work will be carried out only in the work shop, permit should be taken for carrying out hot
work at all other places.
6. No entry will be made into enclosed spaces with out entry permit.
7. Gas bottles valves to be closed and line drained prior leaving the work area.
8. No open oil, chemical and paint drums will be kept in the Engine Room.
9. All DB tank sounding pipe caps and level gauge valves will be closed after checking levels in the
tanks.
10. Sludge, dirty oil and bilge tanks soundings entered in daily sounding book.
11. All tools and instruments to be kept back promptly and it should be kept clean. Workplace,
equipments, machineries to be cleaned after any work any time.

12. Any precision instrument to be handed over to First Asst Engineer immediately after use.
13. No consumable items should be wasted, make maximum use of it.
14. ECR to be kept neat and tidy at all times.
15. Engine Room bilges and tank tops to be maintained clean and oil free at all times.
16. All routines to be carried out sincerely everyday. As the Engine Room is manned throughout it is
utmost importance for proper planning and execution.
17. No oil transfers to be under taken in port without prior permission from C/E.
18. Please refer instruction manuals carefully before opening / repair of any machinery / equipment.
19. Check all machineries are kept in auto / Stby mode before maneuvering operation.
20. Any leakages to be immediately attended to.
21. All oily rags and waste to be stowed in the designated containers and make sure that the lid is
kept closed at all times.
22. Boiler water and cooling water tests to be carried out every alternate day.
23. All machinery and tanks opened up for inspection and/or overhaul purposes must be properly
fenced to prevent risk of accidents.
24. During cargo operations, duty engineers should not leave the engine room until properly handed
over to the next duty engineer.
25. Fire fighting equipment and oil spill cleaning equipment to be kept ready at all times.
26. No smoking regulations must be followed as per guidelines.
27. No unauthorized person must be allowed into the engine room.
28. In case of doubt or trouble Chief Engineer to be informed immediately at all times.
