ASTLTIMD - STEEL AND TIMBER DESIGN
APRIL 2022
BEIJING NATIONAL STADIUM- BEIJING, CHINA
The Beijing National Stadium was designed by Herzog & De Meuron Architekten, Arup
Sport and the China Architecture Design and Research Group. It was built for the 2008 Summer
Olympics and Paralympics. This innovative structure is also known as the “Bird’s Nest” due to the
web of twisting steel sections that form the roof. Its outer shell is the world's largest steel structure as
over 42,000 tons of steel were used in this structure.
Based on what I have read, the stadium consists of two independent structures which the red
concrete seating bowl and the outer steel frame around it at a 50ft distance. Commonly described as
“Bird’s Nest”, with its pattern inspired by Chinese-style crazed pottery, the circular shape of the
stadium was originally designed to represent heaven. A series of cantilevered trusses has been
designed to support the roof, shading the seats. The architects and engineers also ensured comfortable
seats and optimum view for all spectators as they designed this unique structure.
Given that the stadium was situated in one of the world’s most seismic zone, one of main
challenge to be solved was to make this fragile design strong enough to withstand seismic activities.
The steel roof of the stadium was skinned with high-tech membranes, which let the sunlight
in to conserve energy. The membrane also keeps the rain and wind out. A state-of-the-art technology
system was used to conserve energy, water and to regulate heat. The building’s facade is open,
allowing natural ventilation.
I may say that given with this intricate and abstract design, the structure serves its function
and satisfied the users along the way. Moreover, the stadium became unique from other because of its
non- conventional design that made it world- class and stand -out project. Aside from its design, one
of the things that is very commendable is its use of huge amount of steels and how they managed to
built this steel structure.
