    As Im sure all have heard, neither the budget news nor legislative action recently taken in Tallahassee is good for public education in our state. A legislative update is being prepared and Ill share that information with you in our next edition. On a brighter note, FCAT scores are coming in and Im happy to report

    our tenth-graders scored first in the

    state in FCAT Writing. Theres a great many good stories reported from our schools here in District 3.

    Im especially pleased and proud to report on the accomplishments of Mr. Crutchfields masonry students in the Pedro Menendez Academy of Artchitectural & Building Sciences.     Congrats to our Menendez STAR Students & Mentors


    On Monday, April 25th, the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce proudly recognized area high schools top 3 percent of each graduating class. Each award recipient chose a mentor to honor during this very special awards banquet. I believe it is quite telling that each PMHS student chose a teacher or school counselor as their honored guest.     Exciting Math News from South Woods


    students were chosen by their teachers to participate in this competition: Keara B., Kaitlyn B., Ryan B., Ella D., Allyssa E., Tanya F., Polo F., Congratulations to Kirra who won the National Honor Roll title by placing in the top 10% of participants. National Honorable Mention accolades went to those students who scored in the top 50%: Alyssa E., Breeanna T., Cheyenne S., Jaden S., Kaitlyn B., Login M., Peyton G., Polo F., and Ryan B.

    Recently 23 secondgraders from South Woods Elementary School competed in the Noetic Learning Math Contest. This is an elementary math contest held twice yearly. More than 6,000 young students representing 358 teams across the country participated in the spring contest. The purpose of this contest is to stimulate students interest in math and inspire them to excel in this subject. The following

    Student earns Gold at SkillsUSA

    consisted primarily of joinery and Bowen is an expert in that area, said Clark. Other FCTC State award recipients include: Josh Gardner (adult) - Silver, Power Equipment, Curtis Varnes (adult) - Bronze, Power Equipment Matt Shapiro (adult) - Bronze, Employment Application and Michael Kilgore (high school) - Silver, Power Equipment. Bowen will represent FCTC at the National Conference in Kansas City, June 19-25.

    The Pedro Menendez High School State Masonry team recently attended the Florida SkillsUSA state masonry competition in Bradenton on May 3rd. The team proved this year that they are the best in the state. The team swept the masonry event and brought home the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Jacob Fulford led the way with a first place finish and scored an outstanding 963 points out of a possible 1000 . Tye Ashley finished second and Tyler Kersey placed third. Jacob Fulford has now qualified to compete in the SkillsUSA National Competition that will be held this June in Kansas City, MO.

The society then hired the six team members and their teacher, Mr. Crutchfield, to work this summer with the Societys restoration mason in making repairs to our beloved old fort, the Castillo de San Marcos.     Osceola Family Night Highlights


    Osceola Family Night was recently hosted by our PTO at the Solomon Calhoun Center. Parents and students were entertained by such activities as swimming, face painting, a HoolaHoop contest, basketball, and even a magician! Of course, lots of food and soft drinks were enjoyed as well! We were thrilled with the great turnout of our school community for this special event!
