Tap Changer:
A device fitted to power transformers for
regulation of the output voltage to its
required levels.
This is achieved by changing the ratio of
the transformer on the system by altering
the number of turns in one winding of the
transformer.

Off-Load Tap changer:

Taps can be changed
after completely isolating a
transformer from the circuit.
Such kind of a tap changer
is usually installed on
distribution transformer.

On-load tap-changer in
regulating transformer:
OLTC are used for changing the
transmission ratio under load.
How it works?
Voltage regulation is normally achieved by
changing the ratios of the transformers on
the system by altering the number turns.
On-Load Tap Changers generally consists
of a diverter switch and a selector switch
operating as a unit to effect transfer
current from one voltage tap to the next.
Tap Changers can be adjusted to fit the
application needs.

Maintenance for On-Load Tap Changer

Risk or event – based Maintenance

-Maintenance is carried out only after a fault has
already occurred and has been detected.

Time– based Maintenance

-In this case maintenance is carried out at predetermined
intervals or according to specified criteria and is intended to reduce the
probability of failure. This is a safe method and it is recommended for
transformers and conventional on load tap changers.

-It is based on performance and / or mentioned as it is of great advantage for the equipment
parameter monitoring and the subsequent actions. In user and offers the following benefits:
contrast to time – based maintenance it allows extending • No maintenance necessary
maintenance intervals to the limit and thus exploit • No maintenance costs
equipment reserves. • No costs for logistic and planning
• No shutdown required
• Best life cycle cost consideration
• Best solution for the environment
Regardless of which maintenance strategy is decided on, it is of vital
importance, to know and understand the
surrounding process in order to make the right decision.
