Norris Sucker Rods
Norris Sucker Rods
Norris Sucker Rods
All rods are straightened and inspected by Eddy Current for surface defects. Both ends are upset by automatic high-
speed hot forging. Rods are full length normalized to relieve residual stresses, air-quenched and tempered to refine and
homogenize grain structure, and surface shot-blasted to remove any remaining heat treat scale. Upset pin blanks are
machined and dimensions gauged. Pin threads are cold-formed to strengthen the thread from fatigue. An inhibitor-
lubricant is applied to each pin and thread protector installed. An oil soluble coating protects Norris rods from atmospheric
corrosion in storage. All rods are bundled to prevent handling damage during transportation to the well site. Quality
control inspections are performed at each step of the manufacturing process.
Selection Guide
• Type 30 API Grade C – AISI C-1541-M Carbon Steel. Designed for light-to-medium loads in shallow-to-medium
depth wells and non-corrosive or effectively inhibited corrosive well fluids. Type 30 Sucker Rods are designed for
reciprocating applications.
• Type 40 API Grade K – AISI A-4621-M Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel. Designed for light-to-medium
loads in shallow-to-medium depth wells where corrosion is a problem and must be effectively inhibited. This
grade has been alloyed and effectively heat-treated to maximize its fatigue resistance and improve its corrosion
tolerance in an effectively inhibited corrosive well fluid. Type 40 Sucker Rods are designed for reciprocating
applications.
• Type 54 API Grade D Carbon – AISI C1541-VM Carbon Steel. Designed for medium-to-heavy loads at any
depth and non-corrosive or effectively inhibited corrosive well fluids. Type 54 Sucker Rods are designed for
reciprocating applications but can be utilized in some Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) applications.
• Type 78 API Grade D Alloy – AISI A-4142-M Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel. Designed for medium-to-
heavy loads at any depth and mild-to-medium corrosive well fluids that are effectively inhibited against corrosion.
This grade has been alloyed and effectively heat-treated to resist fatigue and improve its corrosion tolerance in an
effectively inhibited mild-to-medium corrosive well fluid. Type 78 Sucker Rods are designed for reciprocating
applications but can be utilized in some Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) applications.
• Type 90 API Grade D Special – AISI 4320-M Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel. Designed for medium-
to-heavy loads at any depth where corrosion is a problem and must be effectively inhibited. This grade has been
alloyed and effectively heat-treated to maximize its fatigue resistance and improve its corrosion tolerance in an
effectively inhibited corrosive well fluid. Type 90 Sucker Rods are designed for reciprocating applications but can
be utilized in some Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) applications.
• Type 96 Special High Strength Grade – AISI A-4138-M Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel. Designed for
heavy loads at any depth and mild-to-medium corrosive well fluids that are effectively inhibited against corrosion.
This grade has been alloyed and effectively heat-treated to resist fatigue and improve its corrosion tolerance in an
effectively inhibited mild-to-medium corrosive well fluid. Type 96 Sucker Rods are designed for reciprocating
applications but can be utilized in some Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) applications.
• Type 97 Special High Strength Grade – AISI A-4330-M Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel. Designed
for extremely heavy loads at any depth and corrosive well fluids that are effectively inhibited against corrosion.
This grade has been alloyed and effectively heat-treated to maximize its fatigue resistance and improve its
corrosion tolerance in an effectively inhibited corrosive well fluid. Type 97 Sucker Rods are designed for
reciprocating applications but can be utilized in some Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) applications.
Pony Rods
Norris Pony Rods are manufactured to the same chemical and physical properties, dimensions, tolerances and rod body
diameters as Norris rods. Pony rods are available in 2 ft, (0,61 m), 4 ft. (1,22 m), 6 ft. (1,83 m), 8 ft. (2,44 m) and 10 ft.
(3,05 m) standard lengths. Other lengths are available on special order.
