STAINLESS STEEL RIGGING SYSTEMS
Nobles recommends the following rigging systems and combinations. The rigging systems are divided into three types.

1. Systems that require no swaging

These systems utilise wire rope grips or swageless terminals. No specialised equipment is generally required although wire rope cutters are
recommended particularly if swageless terminals are to be used. Wire rope grips are the least aesthetically pleasing system but are cost
effective and reliable particularly in less critical, hidden or temporary applications. Swageless terminals are a very good option and provide
an excellent balance between cost, ease of use and a professional looking finish. Wire rope grips and swageless terminals do not provide the
same strength as machine swaged terminations but upwards of 70% of the rope MBL can usually be achieved if the terminations are applied
correctly.

2. Systems that require hand swaging only

These systems utilise ferrule secured thimble eyes as the main
terminations. Ferrule secured eyes can be machine pressed
but in a lot of on-site rigging applications it is adequate and practical
to swage the thimble eye with a hand swage tool. We recommend
that ferrules are filed or linished to an even finish after hand
swaging. Hand swaging does not have the same strength or finish
as a machine swaged thimble eye but if done correctly and carefully
can produce very good results. Hand swage thimble eyes are the
quickest and most economical on-site eye termination.

3. Systems that require machine swaging

These systems produce the best finish and strength but are also the most expensive. These systems typically utilise rigging screws with a
swage end, swage fork terminals or machine swaged ferrule secured thimble eyes. The use of rigging screws with a swage end and swage
fork terminals produce a sleek, strong and aesthetically pleasing wire rope assembly. A wire rope swaging press or roll swaging machine is
required for machine swaging. Nobles have presses and roll swaging machines available for hire in some areas or assemblies can be made
in-house to measurements provided.

The jaw and jaw turnbuckle can be swapped for a jaw and jaw

must be secured to the post after it has been fed through the
turnbuckle eye.

The dee shackle is not required if the saddle is fed through the
thimble before being secured to the post or if the thimble eye
is opened up and closed around the saddle before the wire rope
grips are applied. The plane of the wire rope grips and saddle
must be considered if the thimble is attached directly to the
saddle.
Note: If higher strength is required i.e. such as in a bracing
application, the use of 3 or 4 wire rope grips per end termination
is recommended to achieve the desired strength. 2 or 3 wire rope
grips per end should be adequate for barrier or balustrading type Wire rope assembly utilising Swageless Terminal attached directly

2. SYSTEMS THAT REQUIRE HAND SWAGING ONLY

Hand swage tools will accommodate the swaging of imperial or
metric sized wire rope. Nobles stainless steel wire rope is usually
supplied in metric sizes 2 – 6mm but some imperial sizes may be
available.
Note: The use of thimbles is highly recommended in hand swaged
ferrule secured eyes. The thimble protects the inside of the wire
rope against wear and kinking due to tensioning the eye around
a small diameter eye bolt, saddle or pin. Thimble eyes need to be
opened and closed with pliers or vice grips if the eye is to be held
captive in an eyebolt or turnbuckle eye.
Before the wire rope is attached turnbuckles or rigging screws
should always be wound out to the longest practical length
although at least two thread diameters should be retained in
the turnbuckle or rigging screw body. This will enable maximum
adjustment when tensioning. Wire rope has some stretch under

FERRULES
Copper ferrules are recommended for use on stainless steel wire
rope as they will provide the best possible corrosion resistance
and longest life.

permanent applications or hook and eye turnbuckles or jaw and
jaw rigging screws if the rigging needs to be removable.
The use of hook and eye turnbuckles reduces the strength of
the assembly but enables quick and easy removal of the rigging.
Jaw and jaw rigging screws provide a good balance between
aesthetic appeal, high strength and removability. Eyebolt
post fixings drilled in the same direction as the wire rope are
recommended for maximum strength.
Note: The use of thimbles is highly recommended in machine
swaged ferrule secured eyes. The thimble protects the inside of
the wire rope against wear and kinking due to tensioning the eye
around a small diameter eye bolt, saddle or pin. Thimbles eyes
need to be opened and closed with pliers or vice grips if the eye
is to be held captive in an eyebolt or turnbuckle eye.
Turnbuckles or rigging screws should always be wound out to

will enable maximum adjustment when tensioning. Wire rope has
some stretch under tension and it is particularly important that
the maximum adjustment is available on long runs of wire.

END FITTINGS, TERMINATIONS & USE OF EQUIPMENT
Listed below are some tips on how to achieve the most Hand Swaging
professional results possible using stainless steel rigging.

Thimbles

Thimbles need to be opened and closed, either with pliers or vice

grips if the thimble eye is to hold an eyebolt or turnbuckle eye
captive. If shackles are used in the system they can also be held
captive in a thimble depending on the size of the shackle relative
to the thimble and whether or not the body of the shackle is
required to be in the thimble eye. When hand swaging it is important that the correct ferrule,
thimble and hand swage tool are chosen to suit the wire rope
Wire Rope Grips being used. Most hand swaging tools have a choice of two or
more dies sizes in the jaws so it is imperative that the correct
die is used. Note in the picture above how the die size matches
perfectly with the ferrule contour. Hand swaging will in most
cases take at least two bites on the ferrule and in the larger sizes
(4 - 6mm) three or more bites will be required. We recommend
ferrules are filed or linished to a neat finish after hand swaging

Machine Swaging

Wire rope grips should always be applied with the saddle of the
grip on the live or main line of the wire rope. The number of grips
required depends on the application and the desired strength.
For maximum strength 3 or 4 grips is recommended per eye
termination and they should be placed about 6 rope diameters
apart. If strength is not an important factor then 2 or 3 grips per
eye termination should be adequate. A ratchet drive and socket is
recommended for tightening nuts.

Swageless Terminals

When machine swaging, the forming of the eye in the ferrule is

the same as hand swaging and like hand swaging, it is imperative
that the correct ferrule and thimble or swage terminal is chosen
to suit the wire size and that the correct die system is used.
The dies for swaging ferrules are different from the dies for
swaging terminals. Swage terminals require a special steel
Swageless Terminals are quick and easy to apply and look very swaging die as pictured above. Also note as with Hand swaging

Nobles website at www.nobles.com.au terminals two or three bites will be required depending on the
length of the die and the length of fitting. After swage dimensions
should be checked for conformance, refer to after swage
dimensions in the specifications section of this brochure.

CARE & MAINTENANCE OF STAINLESS STEEL RIGGING
Stainless steel rigging is usually considered to be very low
maintenance but it still should be cleaned from time to time to
keep it looking at its best. The generally accepted method of
cleaning stainless rigging is with a soft cloth and mild detergent
before being rinsed with clean cold water.
Abrasive scourers and steel wool pads should be avoided but
commercial metal cleaners or polishes can be applied to remove
any stains or if a highly polished effect is desired.

Nobles also recommend the use of Lanotec on stainless rigging.

Lanotec is a lanolin based environmentally friendly natural
lubricant, sealant and corrosion inhibitor that is derived from the
wool of sheep. Lanotec should be applied sparingly with a clean
soft cloth and after 30 minutes it can be polished off leaving a
clear protective film on the stainless rigging. Lanotec should be
applied regularly with the frequency varying with the location or
surrounding environment. Rigging that is close to the coast or is
in a corrosive environment should be cleaned and have Lanotec
applied more regularly than inland installations
While the nature of stainless steel and in particular Grade 316
stainless steel rigging is highly resistant to corrosion, brown
discolouration or staining can still occur in certain situations.
The discolouration will generally have little or no effect on
the strength of the rigging but can detract from the overall
appearance of the rigging particularly if it is in an architectural
or feature application.

9
Stainless Steel Rigging
STAINLESS STEEL WIRE ROPE
There are three common constructions of stainless steel wire rope used in fixed rigging applications. Nobles are stocking stainless steel wire
rope mainly in 316 grade but some 304 grade product is available.

7 x 19
7x19 is the most common and versatile construction of stainless steel
wire rope. It consists of 7 strands each with 19 wires and is the most
flexible and the easiest construction to work with particularly where the
rope needs to turn corners, change directions or where ferrule secured
thimble eyes and wire rope grips are used. 7x19 can be used in either
fixed rigging or for limited working rope applications such as on a
boat winch.

7x7
7x7 consists of 7 strands each with 7 wires and is not as flexible as
7x19. 7x7 is an excellent choice for fixed rigging applications such as
balustrading and safety barrier rails. Although 7x7 is stiffer than 7x19
it is still capable of limited angles and can be used with thimble eyes
or swage fittings. 7x7 has very limited applications as a running or
working rope.

1 x 19
1x19 consists of a single strand with 19 wires. 1x19 is very stiff and is
suitable for fixed “straight line” rigging only such as mast stays, guy
ropes and structural applications. It cannot be used with thimble eyes
and is best utilised and looks very effective with machine swaged end
fittings.

Maximum Working Load (MWL) is the maximum load that should be placed on these shackles
in a given application. The Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) is 8 times the MWL. Although the MBL of
stainless steel is similar to mild steel it should be noted that the yield strength of stainless steel is
lower. Mild Steel will typically yield at about 65-70% of MBL but Stainless Steel will yield at about
40-45% of the MBL that is why a higher factor of safety (8:1) is recommended for stainless steel
shackles.
