GENERAL NOTES :
-THESE DOCUMENTS ARE NOT RELATED TO PROPRIETY, C.E.S. IS NOT A REGISTERD MARK BUT USED FOR
ONLY THE SCOPE OF INFORMATION, ENG. LUCA BARBAGALLO IS ONLY DEVELOPER OF THIS IDEA.
- SHARING IS ACCEPTED FOR THIRD PARTS TOO, BUT SPECIFYING THE ORIGIN OF THIS IDEA, PLEASE.
- THIS SPECIFICATION BORN FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OF ENG. LUCA BARBAGALLO.
The purpose of the technical specification is to illustrate and define the SWS process (Sour water
stripping) of unit 1080 "Acid water treatment" of SRU plant (Sulphur recovery unit) including
simulation flowsheet, M&H material balance, process flow diagram and relative dimensioning of the
equipment involved, in this initial FEED phase. The process hierarchy involves the process activities,
listed below:
Process description
Process simulation
Sour water stripper 1080-C-101 duty specification
Drafting of mass and energy balances and of the process flow diagram PFD
Preliminary sizing of FEED equipment
Drafting of piping diagrams and instrumentation P&ID
Drafting of the PDS process datasheets of the equipment.
2. PROCESS DESCRIPTION
The process flow is based on the simulation data (SWS_SIM_01 / 02), under steady state conditions,
from which 2 operational running cases are deduced for sizing. The first case is without recirculation,
while the second with partial recirculation of the effluent current at 10% of the flow rate to the WWTU
(Wastewater treatment unit), to increase the efficiency of the separation of NH3 and H2S with traces
of CO2.
The streams of sour water feedstocks are all conveyed by the units of WWTU, SRU1, SRU2, ISBL
UNITS to the stream 101, where the acid waters with content of H2S, NH3, CO2 and a low content
of paraffinic and various plant oils and washing water. The stream 101 is conveyed into the 1080-V-
101 accumulation buffer, which has the function of separating any oils present from the separation
dam, inside the vessel itself, and by means of a 1080-P-103 pump, operating at intermittently and
with level control it re-launches the oils to slop, in a treatment and storage unit and to the burners.
The excess gases that are released are sent to the acid blowdown with N2 as the carrier from the
line 102 at the head.
The acidic water accumulated is conveyed by a system of 1080-P-102 A / B pumps which re-launch
downstream to the sour water feed preheater 1080-E-101 where the acid current is preheated before
entering the stripping column 1080-C- 101.
The column is the heart of the unit, the tower is made up of 14 sieve trays, where the feed is
allocated above the first plate at the head, while from the bottom, under plate 14, medium pressure
steam @ 12 barg is blown, which causes and accelerates the separation of the acid gases present in
the aqueous influent at the top of the column, with a percentage of aqueous vapor. On the bottom
accumulates stripped water with a specific content of H2S equal to 1 ppmw% and NH3 at about 10
ppmw% and CO2 in traces.
The bottom product feeds the exchanger to preheat the feed. The effluent will be pumped through
the 1080-P-104 to an additional 1080-P-103 A / B trim cooler, before being sent to the B.L. as
stripped water and redistributed in the distribution network.
The head stream conveys the acid gases plus an excess water content to a 1080-AC-101 air cooler,
to partially condense the acidic waters and separate them in a 1080-V-102 condensed vessel drum,
of which the head stream will bring the acid gases to BD and SRU for sulfur recovery.
The bottom products will be conveyed through a 1080-P-102 pump to the Ammonia scrubber
section.
The recirculation is used through the 1080-P-102 pump, in delivery 10% of the flow rate is re-
launched in the feed current to the preheater and 90% will be conveyed into the Ammonia scrubber
unit, 905 kg / h are added to the column feed for increase the efficiency of the separation and when
the abatement capacity of the Ammonia scrubber section is reduced by 10 - 15%, for which
recirculation will be necessary.
The following document represents the process flow diagram described in section 2.1., attached on
