Preface
This manual is designed as a technical training aid, it is not to replace the workshop
manual or operators manual, but should be used in conjunction with these, where
detailed procedures are given, and further detailed service information is provided.

4WD Engagement
There are two types of four-wheel drive system; one consists of a drop gearbox
(fitted between the gearbox and centre housing), drive shaft and front axle. This
dropbox consists of a train of gears that transfer drive from the rear of the gearbox to
the main drive shaft. The drive is engaged and disengaged mechanically on all
models.
The other system is known as side drive and consists of a 4wd pod, which is bolted
onto the side of the centre housing.
The driveshaft takes the drive along the left-hand side of the tractor directly onto a
pinion in the front axle. The pinion inturn drives the crownwheel, differential, half
shafts and finally the epicyclic units. The epicyclic units are in effect the outer hubs of
the axle and the wheels are bolted to these hubs.

Side Drive

General Description
Side drive consists of a 4wd pod, which is bolted onto the side of the centre housing.
The drive for the pod is taken from the rear axle pinion shaft, it is then transferred
from the pinion shaft to a pair of compound gears, the compound gear are free to
rotate around the PTO shaft housing. From the compound gears drive is passed
through an idler gear to the 4wd coupler.
The driveshaft then takes the drive along the left-hand side of the tractor directly onto
a pinion in the front axle. The pinion inturn drives the crownwheel, differential, half
shafts and finally the epicyclic units. The epicyclic units are in effect the outer hubs of
the axle and the wheels are bolted to these hubs.

General Description
The four-wheel unit is bolted to the rear of the gearbox housing forming an integral
unit. It contains the drive train of gears from the main output shaft of the gearbox to
the drive shaft of the 4WD front axle.
The drive train consists of three shafts, a top shaft, intermediate shaft and output
shaft.
The top shaft is supported on a ball bearing within the rear casting. Positioned on the
rear of the shaft is a drive gear and sliding coupler. The drive gear is free to rotate
around the top shaft.
The intermediate shaft supports a compound gear arrangement. The shaft is hollow
to allow the PTO drive shaft to pass through it.
From the intermediate shaft drive passes to the output shaft through a pair of
constant mesh gears.
To engage 4WD the sliding coupler on the rear of the top shaft is moved forward
along it splines, to lock the freely bushed gear onto the top shaft. The drive is now
transferred from the shaft into the coupler and onto the gear. The intermediate and
output shafts being inconstant mesh with the top shaft now rotate and transmit drive
to the front axle.
