ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT
IN BRIGADA PAGBASA
Reading is an important skill that needs to be developed amongst children. Not only is it
necessary for survival in the academe, but also in adult life as well. The sooner they are engaged
to reading, the greater their interest will be. Reading out loud exposes children to proper
grammar and phrasing. It enhances the development of their spoken language skills and their
ability to express themselves verbally. That is why DEPED launched BRIGADA PAGBASA as
part of this year’s BRIGADA ESKWELA.
We started with identifying the slow readers among our students. It is done through the help of
the class advisers. Then, we also identified volunteer tutors – 4th year college students who are
very much willing to conduct Brigada Pagbasa. We conducted an assessment after discussing the
lists of slow learners. This is to measure every child’s ability or level in reading on whether they
can recognize letters and know phonemes or nothing at all. This is done by doing a house-to-
house visit.
After the assessment, we categorized them according to their abilities. This method helped our
volunteer tutors to focus on the necessary needs of every child on the list. Then, we prepared a
selected area in the community where these volunteer teachers and slow readers can meet and
conduct BRIGADA PAGBASA – one on one. I can say that our volunteer tutors had difficulties
in this program because the threat of pandemic is still everywhere. However, they pursued it
because they believe that reading exposes kids to new vocabulary. Even though they didn’t
understand all of the words that are new to them, they were still able to absorb something from
the context that may deepen their understanding the next time they encountered such words. And
through this, little by little, the students will be able to read and comprehend.
The volunteer tutors taught first the students about phonemes, then basic sight words, to phrases
and finally, simple sentences. We also have donors of books and other volunteers to support
these 4th year college students with their snacks. Indeed, this BRIGADA PAGBASA in our
school is a collaborative effort.
“Inspire children to read. Give them access to different reading material that they'll enjoy and
discuss it with them”. This is one of the things I always remind our volunteer tutors because if

we can provide more reading materials to them, they will have more exposures to letters, words
and stories. We also decided that we can read Filipino stories to them with values so that we can
teach not only reading, but also establish good behavior to them.
For now, we are hoping that though BRIGADA PAGBASA may be finished or may pass, yet,
the interest of students in reading will still continue. And soon we can finally say that they are
not slow readers anymore, but LEADERS in READING.
