Creativity

Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and valuable is formed. Every person has a

different way of expressing their creative side, whether that be problem-solving, original and innovative

thinking, or artistic, to name a few. As you grow up, you start to realize where you are the most creative.

For most people, it is when they are doing something they are passionate about. This ability we all

inherit allows us to be innovative and progress as a society.

We are all born with the gift to use our imaginations and create. However, it is something that we

can lose if we do not practice it enough. For example, a study conducted by George Land in 1968 tested

the creativity of 1,600 children ranging in ages from three-to-five years old. The results show that 98%

of the children were able to use some form of imagination. This assessment worked so well that he

decided to re-test the same children at 10 and 15 years old. Land was amazed when he saw the results

drop dramatically. Only 30% of the kids used creativity at the age of 10 and 12% at 15. Knowing this, it

is crucial to work on your creativity regularly with everything you do.

One way to build your creativity is to find a new way to complete everyday tasks. For instance,

if you take the same route to work each day, your mind sees the same things. Instead, try a different
path. This change will allow your brain to work more since it will see new things and experiences.

Another way to grow your imagination is by trying new hobbies, such as painting. Painting is one of the

best exercises for creativity because it forces your brain to picture each step you need to take to replicate

the vision in your imagination. These skills and exercises can help you be more creative in every part of

your life. As a result, you may find something you are passionate about and want to pursue.

I express my creative side the most on the golf course. Each shot that I approach, I always ask

myself, “Is there more than one way to hit this shot?” When asking myself this question, I open my

mind to many possibilities and options for hitting that shot. Normally, the more difficult the shot, the

more creative I am. One perspective I have when golfing is looking at each shot as a blank canvas.

There are endless options to get the golf ball close to the hole. I just need to decide which shot I am most

comfortable with hitting, picture how the shot looks in my mind, and execute.

In conclusion, your imagination can change your life if you learn how to use it in everything you

do. It will help you gain a new perspective and find more than one solution to a problem. Ever since

incorporating creativity into my golf game, I have shot lower scores and become more versatile as a

player. I used to view golf as a one-dimensional sport, which limited and hindered my growth. Now, I

am learning how many of the greatest golfers viewed this complex game in their unique way.
