EDUC 203: THE TEACHER AND THE COMMUNITY, SCHOOL
CULTURE, AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP
1. Here is what one Dean of a College of Education told her freshmen teacher education students in her Welcome
Address on Orientation Day:
“Believing that you don’t learn everything in the classroom, the College of Education, which will be your home for
four years has prepared a menu of annual co-curricular activities for you. All of these are meant to help you become
the true professional teacher that this College and University have envisioned you to become…”
b. In the context of this Welcome Address, what does this statement “…do more, learn more, and have more…”
(Pope Paul VI, Populorum Progressio, 1967) What message do you get in relation to your pre-service education?
2. “I don’t hear what you are saying because who you are speaks louder than what you say”. How does this quote
apply to the professional teacher as a community leader? Discuss.
I understand that actions speak louder than words, but my words drive my actions. Actually, my thoughts drive my
actions, and my feelings influence my thoughts. I try to regulate my thoughts by attempting to control how things make
me feel, and I first learned this by attempting to control my anger. I occasionally use words to justify my behavior, but I
try not to brag about it. You've decided not to listen to me because you believe you already know who I am. My words
and deeds are inextricably linked. As a prospective teacher, I share my knowledge with everyone on a daily basis, and I
also learn from the kids. I use my failures to help me grow and learn from my mistakes. I wouldn't change anything in my
past since I wouldn't know what I know or be who I am if I didn't.
3. Your mayor has a teacher candidate for a teaching position. Your ranking is over. Your mayor’s candidate was not part
of the ranking and is not a licensed teacher. As a professional teacher, what would you do?
If this were to happen to me, I would pursue legal action as a professional instructor. Because the city and the school are
legally separate, the mayor has no role in hiring school employees. A public school can only hire a licensed teacher as a
substitute for a maximum of 45 days per school year. A school can have a car and analyze a teacher without applying for
and receiving a waiver from the Department of Education, so I will really complain and bring this issue to the Department
of Education because this is really unfair for those teachers who work really hard just to be hired, and a mayor's candidate
who is unlicensed will easily hard just because he is or here mayors candidate that's a big issue that a mayor should face
as what I’ve said a mayor has no rule in hiring a school employees because the school district is separated from a city.
4. As a community leader, what will you do if you see something negative in the community culture? Cite concrete
example.
As a community leader, if I notice something unfavorable in the community culture, I'll confront it and, if necessary,
change or delete it, because a negative community culture can influence everyone in the community. It can lead to a
negative mindset, a terrible way of life, or a toxic or negative community. When it comes to politics, for example, the
unfavorable community culture stops residents from making their own choices. It is true that in some societies, the
leader's choice is shared by the entire community. This is highly dangerous for certain children, who will remember it and
adopt this way of thinking as they grow older. As a community leader, I will utilize my voice to combat this negative
community culture and educate them that we have our own choices, our own beliefs, and we have complete freedom to
select whom we want to chose.
