A New Creature in Christ
Acts Chapter 9
1
And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went
unto the high priest,
2
And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way,
whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
3
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a
light from heaven:
4
And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou
me?
5
And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it
is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
6
And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the
Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
7
And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.
8
And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led
him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.
9
And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.
10
And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a
vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
11
And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire
in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
12
And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that
he might receive his sight.
13
Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done
to thy saints at Jerusalem:
14
And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
15
But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name
before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
16
For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.
17
And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said,
Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent
me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
18
And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith,
and arose, and was baptized.
19
And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the
disciples which were at Damascus.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.

Paul was born in Tarsus (now in the south east of Turkey) to a Jewish family. He had a dual
identity as lots of Jews did in antiquity. He had a Jewish education, a Jewish way of life and
abided by the Law of Moses. But was brought up outside of the homeland and was also at
home in Greek culture, fluent in Greek, and had at least some understanding of the Greek
or Roman cultural traditions.
He was a Pharisee, one of a group of Jews who policed the boundary of the law and made
sure that they and others were faithful to the law of Moses. Paul was an extremely
passionate Jew and he often uses the word 'zeal' of himself. One of the most fascinating
stories about Paul is his incredible transformation on the Damascus road but one thing that
doesn't change in this transformation is his passion. He just becomes passionate for a
different cause.
On his way to cause more harm to the early Christians, Jesus Christ appeared to him. He fell to
the ground and heard the voice of Jesus saying;
At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. Acts 9:20
Paul immediately started preaching the word of God and declared that Jesus is the son of the
Most-High God.
Damascus road
The importance of Paul's conversion, his turn-around from persecuting Jesus to preaching Jesus,
cannot be underestimated. Paul himself finds it difficult to describe what had happened and in a
fascinating passage in one of his letters he explains this as a resurrection appearance of Jesus (1
Corinthians 15.8-10)
If we say we’ve accepted Jesus, we must act like Paul. We must be swift to change our ways and
always run away from evil.
Through the grace and love of God, he sends the holy spirit into our lives. The holy spirit is the
forceful power of God. Through the power of the holy spirit, we entirely become a new person,
and our thoughts become new.
The holy spirit enters our body, soul, and minds. We now become fearful of the power of God.
This means we avoid sin by all means possible, put away the old person, and follow Christ with
all our hearts.
Luke 19:1-10
King James Version
19 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
2
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and
he was rich.
3
And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of
stature.
4
And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
5
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus,
make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
6
And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
7
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that
is a sinner.
8
And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the
poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
9
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son
of Abraham.
10
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
